    Default Baluster spacing calculator

I just re-wrote the spacings and centres calculator at blocklayer.com. Now you can click to add or subtract a baluster (or stud) and instantly re-calculate spacings, centres and running lengths. So you can sort of play round with it until its right.

    It lives here

Does anything else need to be calculated for balustrades, railings etc?

    Default Calculator

Good one BL. I may never use it but it's a great idea to put it up for those who might.

Very nice BL. The "true length" (running length) table is particularly handy - no error accumulation. I reckon it could be used for things other than balusters too. B-u-u-u-t, it allowed me to enter a spacing greater than 100mm and didn't complain. Only in the past 10 years or so, our codes have been revised from 6" (150mm) max to 4" (100mm) as it was found that a baby could squeeze through the larger opening. If Oz codes have such a restriction, or even if they don't, a flag might be advisable.

Baluster spacing in Australia is 125mm if ground level is more than 1M (I think it's 1M but may be less now).

    Thanks Joe and Mick

Because the logic is the same for all, I was trying to make the (one) calculator work for baluster, wall stud, or any other (fence -pier/panel etc) spacings

Thinking now about separate calculators for balustrades, wall studs, fences etc

Even though they are all the same, it would be easier to flag situations where results may not be to regulation.

Either that, or add a selector for each type and alert accordingly

    What do you reckon?

Thanks for the advice and feedback

Now the centres and spacings calculator works for balusters, fences, studs etc, I want to add the capability to adjust for balusters (or studs, fences) on an angle (as in stairs)

If it has an angle input, I can adjust the running measurements to allow for desired (horizontal) spacings.

Am I on the right track here?

Thanks for any ideas, suggestions etc.

I'd shy away from code enforcement per se, because (a) it exceeds your authority, and (b) codes can change unbeknownst to you. Better to just include a general advisory to verify code conformance.

Variable angle could be a nice addition. Might want to allow both/either angle and/or bevel and/or percent. A lot of folks have confusion about those things. For this situation especially (but perhaps for a horizontal run too), different end spacings could be helpful, instead of space at one end only.

Ooops! You've already done the first one overnight.

    Angle input added.

Now it will adjust the running measurements for the angle, to maintain horizontal member spacings.
You can add or subtract members to get the best spacing and the running measurements are adjusted to suit the angle.

    Does it make sense?

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions
