Default Barn boards and tung oil

    Hello,
I'm cladding a 12' x 12' basement wall with 'brown boards' (from the inside of an Iowa grain barn).
Is Home Depot Tung Oil suitable. It looks good on a test piece, however US $20 for 32 fl oz may end up pricy. Yes the wall really is 12' high.
    Thanks,
    Nigel.

    Hi Nigel,
See if you can find pure Tung oil at a paint shop or hardware shop and dilute it down 1:2 or 1:3 with Citrus Terpene (do a google search to find some in your area). Check the mix against your test piece and if it still looks good (which it will) use whichever of the dilutions you prefer. Cost will drop considerably.

    Regards,

    Rob

Hi Master Splinter. You can buy Sceney's Pure Tung Oil from most hardware stores for $20/litre. Produced right here in Victoria. Works beautifully when diluted with Terpene or White Spirit !:2 or 1:3.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Thanks everyone,
    In the end I used
mineral spirits thinned polyeurathane (same as wipe on poly but a lot cheaper). It was suggested by my buddy Russ in Kansas City. The wall turned out great, it looks similar to the way it was in the barn, only more enhanced. The next job is an industrial (basic) set of five steps from the upper to lower basement level. My preformax planer has just about worn out. It keeps digging in, even after some maintenance yesterday. So I'm temped to buy a DW734 Dewalt planer from Home Depot in Kansas City, Missouri, USA $399 US dollars seems a lot for an occasional hobby. Advice welcome. Also good job Daniel Riccardo in F1 race last weekend. Nigel
