Barrel Nuts?
Please bare with me as not only am I not handy but I'm female and have a tendency to make up my own names for things...
I'm looking for some barrel nuts is what I believe they're called.. Basically I would like to fit timber to the back of an angled frame but I would like a relatively flush finish on both sides... I want to use dome bolts on the outside as they give the ideal finish for me..
I found these on the web:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/240820468/nut.html?tracelog=quickview_todetail
However they are in China and have 30 day shipping (plus I'd MUCH rather spend the money on our own economy)..
Can anyone help me as to where I can find these in Australia? Am happy to pay shipping etc and am looking to buy around 300+ to start with..
I'm open to suggestions also, my main criteria is that it's flush or a rounded finish on the rear side.. T Nuts have already ben suggested and aren't suitable..
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have found Bunnings to be so unhepful, I spoke to some kid who seemed like he was trying not to snicker everytime I said nuts..
Perhaps if I go to the trade desk next time..
But, as long as I know they do exist in Australia then I'm happy..
On a side note: The only thing bare will be my head soon because I'm ready to pull my hair out, I can picture what I want and how it will look and it's frustrating me that nobody understands what I'm after..

Not quite what you have shown, but you can get connector nuts in bulk at various bolt stores. Such as here
EDIT: You will need to mouse-over the image to see it.Last edited by chrisb691; 7th July 2009 at 06:19 PM. Reason: added info

Hi Feeble.
Not sure but they look similar to the fittings used in kitchen cabinets to joint cabinets together.
Usually the cabinets are placed side by side and these "nuts" are located in the corners of the sides on the inside of one cabinet.
A screw with the same head is in the attached cabinet and screws through the side of the second cabinet and into the nut.
This gives a neat finish to joining of the cabinets and it is concealed on the inside of the cupboard.
Try a specialty hardware that supplies to the joinery industry.
In S.A. we have a place called Halidays hardware that tend to carry all the stuff Mitre10 & Bunnies don't. I guess they are a type of architectural hardware??
Best of luck.
Rob.
Just found this link in another post. Pretty good supplier here in S.A.

Similar products, usually in aluminium, are used for binding loose-leaf papers in journals. Should be available at office supplies shops in most major cities, and some minor ones. "Barrel nuts" seems to be the correct nomenclature, BTW.

Hi Feeble
I think what you are after is actually called a connector nut into which a connector bolt screws. Have a look here:
www.bolt.com.au/index.php?cPath=1010_1098_3659
I bought some nylon connector bolts + nuts from Mitre 10 recently. Used them to bolt melamine cabinets together.
Do not think it is possible to use dome nuts with them as they are self-contained.
Barrel nuts, aka dowel nuts, are quite a different item.
You might be able to use a connection sleave - basically a short tube threaded on the inside - and then you can screw a decorative bolt in from each side.
Cheers
Graeme

If you ar in Queensland try Queensland Engineering Supplies.
Another good source is Bolts and Industrial. I think they operate in several states.

Are you sure you wouldn't prefer to re name your barrel nuts "captive nuts" also known as "tee nuts".
Think this is what you want ... pulls flush into the timber backing, just screw in round head bolts of correct length

IIRC another name for the product is 'Boston Bolts' or 'Boston Posts' - they come as a short screw and a 'nut' - the bit you have illustrated - which comes in various lengths by 1/4" (6mm) increments. They were used to bind big volumes of hole punched documents and the shorter sizes are still used in leatherworking - so you might make enquiries with long established stationers or leatherworker's suppliers.
