Default Makita 125MM Random Orbital Sander making funny noise

    Hi all

I noticed today my Makita orbital sander was starting to make a whistling/higher pitched noise when the motor was engaged. I made a video of the sound it makes (it's more noticeable towards the end of the video when I start powering down).

Has anyone heard anything like this before? It's about 6 months old, bought from Mitre10

    Cheers

sorry I couldn't upload the video to the forums, it doesn't work (nothing uploads) so I've linked to YouTube instead

The sound is rising in pitch (ie frequency) but the time taken to reach its peak amplitude lags behind the time taken for the motor to reach its peak speed, therefore I would say it is a product of the rotating platen. It may be something as simple as just air being pumped around it. Does the sound alter with and without a sanding disc being fitted?

At worst it could be the bearing that the platen runs on but to be frank I don’t think there is any cause for concern. Bear in mind that you are running this under load conditions, in use the sander should not be stopped or started without being in contact with a workpiece.

    Thanks Chief Tiff.

The sound is there regardless of whether a sanding disc is attached or not. It only started today as well. It makes the sound with and without the dust collector attached too. Also the lowest speed seems unusually slow, though to be fair, I don't use the low speed if ever.

I'll keep monitoring it; if it gets worse then it's going back.

If it's that new, I'd be taking it back if there is any doubt.one of the benefits of buying local retail is good warranty service.

    +1 for the pad spinning

My Mirka did the same thing when running with no load/contact, I wouldn't be concerned about it.
