One or two (six-packs) under the belt make it easier to understand.

Well... not understand as such, but ya care less about not understanding.

    Skew,
Speaking of 6-packs, I'm finishing one right now. I knew what you meant in your post. There's lots of ways to construct the golden rect. The one javali posted is quite direct. All I meant was that Ian's diagram does show you how to get the first one - it's just that the length and width are reversed from what you wanted. Just scale that one up or down as needed.
    Here goes beer number 6

The other way to do it would be to scale a previously drawn golden rectangle to whatever size you want using its diagonal (see pic).
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Off the topic of Golden mean etc, here are a couple of links to compass and ruler work for polygons.

To work out triangles and stuff try this site http://www.visualtrig.com
It calculates the angles, lengths, areas etc and draws the shapes so you can see whats going on.
The circle calculator http://www.visualtrig.com/circles.aspx is also pretty handy for working out circle bits and pieces

This is a great thread. (Now saved in my Favourites file). It's been said on several previous occasions but it bears repeating: the level of erudition and expertise amongst members of this BB is exceptional. Thanks, fellas! (Have a greenie, Skew, for starting the thread).

    Wongo
That's true but what you, I, and several others have missed is that Skew wants to know how to find X using just a ruler and compass (X , by the way = 0.618033989). Javali has presented the only workable option at this stage.

    Yup.

By the time I've mucked about with calculations, etc. applying my rusty mathematical skills, I could already have the piece marked out with just the compass and ruler and no need for triple checking.

I wish the camera and I could agree on how to make vids; once I get it to see things from my point of view, I'll see about adding to the vid library. Perhaps.

    Default Golden Ratio

Here's how to find the length of the unknown side:

known length/1.618... gives the necessary other length.
