Default Anyone have a Bayer BD300 Drill Press?

At only 15 kilograms this seems like a nice small portable drill press that can be easily kept under the bench and then lifted up when needed - main thing I want it for is drilling pan blanks. Does anyone have one? Sydney Tools - Best Brands At the Best Prices

At 15kg, I suspect there is not a lot of metal in the base, column, or table so it could be fairly prone to flexing and misalignment. I also note that it has a maximum spindle travel of 50mm, so for drilling pens you may have to come in from both ends a lot of the time. If the machine flexes, there may not be good chances of the holes meeting in alignment every time. I'm not a pen turner, but my understanding is that the size and alignment of the centre hole is reasonably critical for the mechanism to fit and operate properly.

I have a lot of time with drill presses from basic hobby level pedestals through to heavy duty industrial gear head units, and absolutely no knowledge or experience with the unit linked to, but suggest that you at least need to see and feel one before committing to it. That may be difficult at the moment as the link suggests that they are taking pre-orders, i.e. they don't have them yet but want to move them fast when they arrive. Another issue with budget drill presses is that they generally have a lot of wriggle room between the head casting and quill, which again upsets alignment and repeatability and would contribute to holes drilled from each end not meeting perfectly in the middle. To test for this, you need to feed the quill to around mid travel, grasp the body of the chuck (not the ring) or a secured drill bit, and try to wobble front to back and side to side. Any movement indicates that the head bore is a slack fit over the quill, and the unit will start drilling at some random point in the range of freedom that the drill tip has, and follow from that point. The wobble test must be done with the quill clear of the stops in the system at full extension and retraction as they clamp the quill against other parts of the head system and mask the excessive clearance, hence the suggestion to test at mid travel.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

I have an old drill press, similar size, which is OK for most things.
It might be worth while comparing it with the similar sized Detroit model, 500w, at the same price from Total Tools.
