    Default U-Beaut Water Dyes

I am going to make some name signs on the scroll saw to hang on the kids doors. Im going to cut them out on some 6mm MDF I have spare.

Will the water dyes work ok on MDF or would it swell too much?

Will the colour come out ok on straight MDF, or should I look at putting a white base coat on first?

Try them out on a test piece first, oges. I've not used the dyes on mdf but if too much dye is applied, yes, the mdf could swell. coating the mdf first wouldn't be a good idea, imho, as it would stop the dye getting into the mdf (I think).

yeah, definitely something to try on a test piece first.

    cheers

Thanks Wendy, yeah I figured I would do some testing over the weekend and start out with a 4:1 ratio and see how it goes.

Well got them done today and this is the result, this is at a ratio of 4:1 water to dye.

Did some name signs for the kids, the SarahJane done in Twilight font and Jack done in Ben10 font.

Also made the Come In/Go Away Ambigram sign for Sarah, she is 12 so im guessing it will be set at Go Away most of the time

Nice work. I particularly like the ambigram. Great design.

Dumb question (I'm not a scroll saw user obviously), but how do you transfer the design onto the wood?

I put down a layer of blue painters tape (to allow for easy removal after) and then glue the printed pattern over the tape with spray adhesive ... drill the holes ... cut out the pattern ... then peal off the remaining tape/paper

    Nice. So simple, yet effective.
