Bed rail fastener
Hi everyone,
I am currently making a bed and looking for fasteners for the side rails. The thing is that I don't want to see the brackets or the fasterners showing inside the bed. I have found exactly what I want on http://www.woodcraft.com/ and it looks like the photo attached. Would anybody know where I can find that or something similar in Sydney? It has to be really strong cause I made the bed sides real big: 49 cms wide (stiles and rails made of Tassie Oak and Jarrah raised panel), they weight a ton even without the bed support mattress and bodies on top....
THanx alot
Cheers
Steph

I had trouble finding them here. I ended up getting mine from either Woodcraft or Rockler. Really great

just looking at those fittings again not sure they would be the strongest choice .
3 screws in end grain , and no support from underneath .

I have solid Jarrah bed that weighs a number of tonnes and I was looking for the same brackets as you. I decided instead to use 10mm locating dowels placed into the end-grain of the side rails and fitted to matching holes in the bed head. I then drilled through the bedhead into the endgrain of the rails and into the side of the endrails and then used 8mm x 75mm furniture screws with the allen key type head. I then tightened all the joints as hard as I could. It is wobble, rattle and squeak free with me (and an occassional visitor (I wish) and a new heavy QS matress.

Bed brackets
I used this type of fitting for a bed with no problems. See here for details on how you can handle the end-grain problem, and where to mail-order them from. Do you have any pics of the bed?

In the past I have drilled blind holes into the inside ends of the bed rails and inserted 1-1/4" hardwood dowel plugs. It's then possible to screw into the endgrain of the rails and through the side grain of the dowels, which eliminates the possibility of the screws pulling out of the end grain.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

Hi,
Thanx for your inputs, looks like am gonna have to order them from overseas and have to wait ages to get them.... sucks !!!!
Texx, I don't have any end grain problem cause the sides are made as 2 stiles and 4 rails supporting 3 raised panels. Therefore, the parts that connect to the bed posts are not endgrain. I'll post pictures of the dry fitted bed (without the panels) this evening.
So, no chances in getting that around Sydney?????

i dont rekon it would be to hard to make them .
with a slight mod to that design.
flat for the female section and angle for the male section . bit of cutting with a fine wheel in an angle grinder and a few countersunk holes

You could try
Mother of Pearl & Sons
who are big stockists of Architectural hardware.
There used to be a few other specialist hardware dealers, but I don't know which ones are still functional - a few had web sites & the sites seem to be dead.
