Default Beginner woodworking classes in Melbourne

This is my first post. I would like to learn how to construct basic items and how to use and maintain tools properly. I will be moving to Malmsbury in a year or so to 5 acres and know I will want to be able to build my own chookshed, benches and garden supports etc. Hubby doesn't garden or construct things, so I will end up in charge of the tool shed! Can anyone tell me a good place to take classes or seek advice on tool selection? I currently live in North Melbourne.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'll check what they have coming up.

    Hi Thrifty Bear

North Melbourne Institute of Technology (NMIT) in Heidelberg do a preparatory course for would be apprentices, which goes through tool maintenance and basic joinery. This might be useful. I think it is a 20 week course, so you might just be able to fit it in.

    Regards

    Rob

Thanks Rob, I can see myself as a would be apprentice! I really wish all those years ago at my high school that girls could have done metal work, woodwork and tech drawing - I would have signed up on the spot. As a quilter and traditional Japanese embroiderer, I can work with great precision on fabric. Just have to swap the medium. I will enquire at NMIT and appreciate yours and other posters' suggestions.
    Cheers

Anything similar up here in Brisbane ? I saw one course (the name escapes me) but it was extraordinarily expensive.

    Any ideas appreciated..

In Melb. the CAE offers WW/furniture making courses regularly, normally in Thornbury. You choose your project.

    CAE Melbourne

    VWA offers something similar:

VWA School of Woodcraft - Overview

Thanks Rob, good tips. I received a copy of "Woodwork for Women" by Patt Gregory in the post today which looks like a great primer. Will check out your suggestions. Cheers

Ivan, what sort of information do you need to learn.
Do you have a router, or are you looking to buy?
What sort of project do you want the router for?

It's not a scary or unusually dangerous power tool IF used properly. It can be a sudden personal injury disaster if you use it wrongly

Before investing money in private tuition, assuming it is available, check out some YouTube videos on routers for beginners to see if they give you the information you need. https://www.google.com/search?q=rout...ih=559&dpr=1.5

Two basic rules that will avoid a lot of risks are: 1. Make sure the router is always feeding into the timber or, if the router is mounted in a table, that timber is feeding into it in the right direction. 2. Never rout timber sandwiched between the cutter and the fence. These rules mightn't mean much to you now, but view some videos and it should become clear.
