Default Belt sander speed too fast

I've a small delta 1/4 hp 3500 rpm 1" belt sander that melts the plastic side of an instant-glued wood-pvc join, even using 600 grit paper. I'm now using a stepped down drill press (to ~ 600 rpm) and this works great except I'm sanding a flat area with a circular profile and it's tricky to do well, nevermind do well on 5000 pieces. I've a small shop - the footprint of this bitsy delta tool is perfect but how to adapt it?
The router speed control rheostat has no effect when put in between the sander and house current so it seems that routers are wired differently from sanders.
Does anyone have any thought on this? Look for a very slow motor? Can one make a pulley system that drives the sander more slowly?
    Thanks in advance, everyone.

    Exclamation

Uncle had similar problem with a sander. Geared it down with pulley and belt system.

By the way, I'm a rude bugger. Forgot to say G'day and welcome to the forums.

If this is the 1" delta sander that has a disk on one end and the belt on the other, then it looks like the motor drives each end directly. You would either need to get a slower motor, or remove the motor and replace it with a shaft and pulley, and use a belt drive between the motor and the pulley. That would mean removing the motor from the sander, which would enlarge the fottprint on your bench somewhat.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Thanks, Peter, I thought this was the case.

Are motors with <1000 rpms made?

Oops - nevermind, found some ... I'm going to have to review electrical basics.
