Thread: What’s on the Bench.

right now the top of my bench is upside down, with all the components for the tailvise sitting on top (or should that technically be underneath) waiting for me to get all enthusiastic about cutting dogholes and half-blind dovetails.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

I've been working with sheet goods a bit too much lately, so I thought it was time to go back to some hand cut joinery on something small. Turns out a couple of planes and chisels needed sharpening. I don't like messy workbenches but this weekend was a half hour here, a half hour there and here we are, what a mess. On the plus side, I haven't completely forgotten how to cut dovetails (only the first set was truly ghastly). Although I did cut on the wrong side of the pin marks initially and had to chop them off and shorten the sides . Being a practice box, the only real damage was to my pride. Over the week I hope I'll have a little time to complete a two tiered cutlery drawer organiser. No one will ever see the joinery for it but a body has to keep in practice right?

Thanks Aldav. I have had a couple of PM's from members who can't see it either. I don't know why. And even curiouser - I can see the image in your post where you quoted my post. Poundy clicked likes for the post so presumably he can see the picture. I could see the picture for at least 12 hours when it was first posted. I don't know what's going on.

That bench looks tidy to me. Mine is much worse. Too many things on at once is the problem. I started making boxes then had to make some more pottery, then had to reload some ammo. And sharpen some more saws and chisels. I still have unfinished boxes and more saws and chisels to sharpen. And i have to load the kiln, and run the chipper to make more mulch for the garden. I need a job to go to to have a rest.
I am learning, slowley.

The trestles are Oregon, the top is a mixed bag of old-growth Eucalypts, including Ironbark, Redgum, Jarrah and some of indeterminate species. All the timber is recycled and has been gifted to me or scrounged at no cost. I didn't set out to build it all out of free timber but that was how things started going and I basically decided to run with that as far as I could.
Here's the build thread. Long-overdue workbench buildI got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

Considering I started this thread quite a while back,
A small update for my self,
We had been in Melbourne for the last few months, so no Bench time, till last weekend when we went home to check on the home extra extra.
That was kind of special for its own smelly reasons.next pandemic, I’m emptying the fridge before leaving.
So we had a little bit of you go too your corner I go to mine after spending a few months together, lol.
The other slight issue, I had made a promise to my self, no more projects till I sort out some more of my creative zone.
I failed hopelessly,
Maybe a pictures are better now than my big mouth.
Cheers Matt.

It's all too clean Matt - looks like you just put the tools on the bench but didn't do anything.

My "what's on the bench" project has come along. It's been the task that never end!
There have been plenty of mistakes but I'm happy with it as my first piece outside of shop furniture.
The outside shell is near complete, as are the drawers. Only the 'secret lock' my daughter requested for the bottom drawer remains.
On either side of the plinth a small portion is removable, held in place with small magnets. This removable piece will have a brass did that extends through the carcass into the bottom drawer, locking it in place.
Adam.
