Thread: What’s on the Bench.

Further to my posts 11 and 14, here is the almost completed project in the same position on the bench as the blackwood timber.

It is finished with Crowie's WOP formula. I still have to give the top another coat and then, after a couple of days, rub it back with 0000 steel wool and EEE to remove any dust nibs. The finish should then very closely match the finish on the other furniture in the room where it is going. The legs will be put on when it is brought indoors.

Looking good there with the dowel plate. I'm looking at making one of those soon to make some dowels to pin the dovetails on the workbench build.

It was a bit of an impulse purchase, but I'm glad I did buy it.

I had a crack at making my own awhile back but to say it was a failure is probably in injustice to the word failure. But hopefully we learn something from each mistake we make.
I had attempted to make the the dowel completely by hand, I was able to achieve some fairly consistent results with the little jig on the bench and a block plane and a spokeshave, but the time it took wasn't worth the effort. I'm sure there was probably a faster way to do it that I hadn't thought of

I made 16 of the sized dowels in a bit under an hour including cutting up the stock vs about 15 minutes each when I tried to make them by hand not including cutting up the stock.
I need 32 for this current bench project but I feel like by the time I have them all made, it will have paid for itself.

Edit. I just had a read of the thread that Bushmiller posted and now I feel like I wasted an hour of my life

I have an offcut of 6mm mild steel that I just drill the right sized hole in when I need to make dowel - nothing fancy at all, no tool steel or heat treat, although I have the gear and ability to do that. When the hole gets blunt or worn I just drill another one. You can even drill out a used up smaller hole to a larger size. When the plate is full of holes I cut another plate off the end of the bar and start again.

You can get a lot of 6mm mild steel for the cost of a professionally made dowel plate.

Finished off the table with some Danish oil.
I don't have a lathe so the pull was made on my little drill press.

Thought I'd throw something in to keep the thread going.

Currently making a folding book stand, adapted from a popular woodworking design.

No idea of the timber as was from a box i picked up from a fellow forumite who was having a clean out. Finish is just straight shellac.

This is the main body and the stand, the book stand arms and ledge are next before riveting them together.


It's a fun little project and a great way to use up some of the small scraps lying around.

Having built 4 kayaks over the past 12 years I figured it was time for something different - so I'm building a canoe .

Will start a thread in the Canoe and Kayak building forum soon.

Bob, it looks like you're moving out of your comfort zone, very slowly. One step at a time, eh.

Your progress is impressive. You've got enough spring style clamps there to sink a canoe!

I have built a few but can't use any now with the lockdown.

Finally finished the book stand. The finish could be much better but I'm happy overall.

I think the design can be made more compact that the P.W plans. I think I'll tackle a few other projects before attempting a new version though.

Finished up this small wall cabinet recently in Surian cedar with an NG rosewood panel in the door.
