    Default new bench

after seeing all the benches people have been making over the past few months I decided it was time to start one of my own.

but I'm going to cop heaps cos of it, am making the base frame out of metal instead of timber.

it's going to be 2.4m x 1.0m x 1.0m the frame will be made using 50mm RHS and will be fully welded.

due to the fact that I will be giving the bench a hiding am going to use 32mm mdf for the top and am going to make a vice to fit one end of the bench plus another about halfway along the length with dogs on both legs so I can work longer timbers

soon as I start will post some pics of the mongrel so that people can criticise me all they want lol
you never stop learning, till the day they shovel dirt on your face

Good plan except I think dog holes in MDF would be a disaster.

Is that 1m high with or without the 32 mm MDF? 1 m high, even with the MDF, is pretty high, seeing as most people find 900 to 950 mm works for them. Unless you have worked extensively at that height before I suggest you make it shorter since it is easy to prop up afterwards, than to be cutting legs shorter, especially if you add something like this:

Which means you can jack up and level the bench as needed. I've also used the same height/levelling system on my pedestal drill press.

If the legs are going to be made of square section steel I can't see dog holes working too well in them, (not to mention having to drill all those holes in steel). It may be better to clad the side of the legs with some 4 x 2 and put the dogholes in that. This should probably be planned into the design as it could look pretty tacky adding on afterwards.
