    Default Bench seats

Making an indoor bench, sort of a cross between colonial style and garden bench, from jarrah.

I'm attaching the seat slats to curved rails. The two ways I'm considering doing this are:

    1. Countersunk screws with holes plugged with jarrah dowel/round things.

    2. Tap nail in underneath, snip off head, glue and tap nail into place.

I'd really prefer not to have round plugs in the seats, but the rails are far too deep (100mm) to screw in from underneath, so I'm leaning towards #2.

Other options maybe triangular pieces screwed to side of rails/bottom of seats, glue alone, pocket screw.

What do y'all reckon? Is there a better way?

Since it is indoor I am surmising that it will get a fair workout and be reasonably clean. This in mind I would try and obtain some contrasting timber and make dowels out of that so that they become a sort of feature. Only a thought....

Why cant you counterbore the holes until 25-30 remain and the screw through this (with a pilot hole) into the seat? Is it possible? Damien.

    Hi Tex,

    What about just dowel.
that is drill a hole into the rail insert dowel then drill hole into seat slat from underneath and then place onto dowel. depending on the width of the slats you may be able to use two dowels. (don't forget the glue )

    just a thought.

Thanks all. Dowel is a great idea. Sounds like the go.

I thought this might be one thread that didn't end up with domino as the answer. I was wrong. Is there anything those tools can't do? Have to start saving my money I guess.
