Default Where to get this benchtop made in Melbourne

Hi. I am ordering and installing my own kitchen cabinets. Which leaves the benchtop outstanding.

I want a plywood benchtop with exposed ply side profile (say 38 to 45 mm profile), and a laminate top. I heard it is best to put a slight roll on the edge of the top to prevent chipping.

My gut feeling tells me if I go to a big benchtop showroom they will charge a lot, and I am better to go direct for a tradesman to make it for me once all the cabs are in place?

If anyone is familiar with operators in Melbourne that make these sort of benchtops it would be great to hear.

You are more likely to get helpful answers if you say what part of Melb you are in.

I'd try a few local cabinetmakers for price and date. You're right, in the big showroom, what you want is custom order.

If you like exposed edges the new bamboo sheet products are very attractive.

    2.4 x1.2 x 38mm . I think that is worth around $ 400 - $450

If you round the laminate you make a feather edge that can lift. A small arris will work and look better.

Thanks for the advice. The bamboo products are nice indeed, but a bit busier than the finsh I am looking for. I had two cabinetmakers out to quote already on cupboards, several weeks ago, but neither got back with pricing. Guessing they are both very busy.

May just have to go to the phone book to find someone in the the end.

what you might find as well,is that the cabinet makers generally want the whole job not just the top.that might be why they have not returned

This is the best way. I make benchtops for a living and this is the way I would do it. U don't wanna leave the laminate edge exposed. It lifts too easily and will be prone to chips. Most top shops could do it for u

Thanks for all the replies! I have been doing lots of other hard work on this project by myself and saved some money, so now likely spoiling myself with a stone benchtop. Cal.
