Biscuits V V-nails
I am going to have a crack at framing a few footy jumpers for the local rugby club because the proffesionals want $310 each.
Do you think a biscuit in the mitre joints rather than V-nails would be as good?Cheers,
Howdya

Yes, but why not put keys into the mitres and make a feature of it by using a contrasting wood?
Cheers

Thanks Jim,
I have tried to make a jig to use on the Triton to cut slots for feature keys (for boxes?) but becuase it does not have a mitre track failed dismally. I thought biscuits would be easier and I wouldn't have to buy another handy gadget (V Nailer)Cheers,

No worries - I am sure biscuits will be fine (Heck - Norm uses them all the time).
I made my jig to cut keys on the Triton to slide along the rip fence attached to the doovers I made to run on the angled side of the fence like the push finger. Just takes a couple of holes in the backboard of the jig to run bolts through to the threaded inserts on the front of the doover and away you go - no need for a mitre slot.
Alternatively, you can make a jig for this that attaches to a Jager crosscut sled (which is something every Triton owner should make).Cheers

Thanks Jeremy,
I have never seen any reason to build a sled, I think I can do everything it does on my SCMS.
I do like your idea of running jigs in the DOOVER and might try expanding on that.Cheers,

Hi Howdya,
A jig which slides along the fence is the go for splines- holds the corner 45 to the table.
If the frame is wide enough biscuits are very strong. As for v nails, I use then on thin frames and just tap them in with a small hammer..no need for fancy tools.
cheers

If you still want to do the contrasting mitre key thing you could use your biscuit joining machine to cut the slots. You just hold the cutter at 45 degrees to the sides of the frame and plunge in...easy. Then just fill slot with a contrasting timber of the appropiate thickness
I have done this for boxes and frames....its quick and easy
cheers

What BD said, although add a sacrificial bit of wood on the exit side of the slot to stop any breakout.
