Default Bit of fun at work.

So i've been unemployed for a good while, and a mate very recently got me a casual start. I'm a mechanic by trade, however spent most of my time in dealership pre delivery dept. Also did a few years as a locksmith so a bit of wood there fitting locks.

I didn't expect to have much to do with wood in this job until i realised they did T&G flooring on some trays, its not a lot, and not often, enjoying it none the less. Thought i'd share the pic.

Steel tray with T&G flooring fitted to a new landcruiser ute. This is just after i fixed it down with the gal screws and watched it get a coat of linseed oil lovin.

Nice. Does it have any kind of underlay, or is it bolted straight onto the steel?

countersunk gal tech headed (m8's i think) into the gal framwork chanel of the tray, each board is predrilled and countersunk and jacked into place, its quite solid and no underlaying.

Hahaha bit beyond my skills SM, i wish i had that kind of talent and skill.

Actually on a serious note ...
twas thinkin (shaddup you lot ) that a rounded over piece along each top edge of the sides and back gate of the tray might look spiffy

Probably would, i'd make all the swingin doors wood if it were me, not my business though and i got no call on anything made just turn up and do what needs to be done. I was just happy to have some element of wood in a place i didn't expect any at all.

    Ah Thompy

A ute with a timber tray. I have one of those. Well not quite. What I actually have is the tongue and groove boards that I milled out of ironbark ready for the tray on either a commodore (older model) or falcon trayback when I got one.

I was really into this until my treasurer withdrew funding. Said I couldn't have one until I had finished renovating the house. By the time I finish the house, the authorities may have withdrawn my right to have a licence! Besides, I won't need a ute then will I?

Half a tick, "need" doesn't come into it. It's a "right." A bit like a shed.

That floor in the picture looks really good.

Good to meet up with you at the Brissy wood show.

    Regards

Nice one Neal, its always good when something unexpected comes out of work

I have had ideas for a while about restoring an old kingswood WB or similar including a woodern tray. Its on the "one day" list.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

Wow, great work. Good to see. Would love to see full timber sides etc.. but might not be as practical.

If ya lay down on that wood...would that classify as planking.

Interesting coment. Just for the record, I think the attached picture may be the first catalogued attempt at planking.

Rollie Free (Aussie kid) breaking the motorcycle world speed record in 1948 on a Vincent. Location was Bonneville Salt flats in the US.

He had this theory that streamlining was important. To this end he wore a bathing cap and speedos and as you can see stretched himself out (planking?)over the rear mudguard.

Whilst he considered streamlining important, PPE was not high on his priorities. He is travelling at a little over 148mph!
