A bit of practice

Hi there,
I was asked to make a pair of side tables to match or at least be compatible with the entertainment unit. That is built from recycled hardwoods with nail holes and gum veins, looks very rustic. I scored some old floor joists and set too picking out the bits with character. The reverse of normal selection. Being a lazy woodworker I went to bunnies to get table leg brackets but they dont have any. I could have found some on line but I decided I needed the practice at M&T joints as it has been a very long time since I did any. First instinct was cobble up a jig for the tablesaw but my growing collection of rescued saws and chisels were calling out for quality time with me. 16 M&Ts mostly hand cut. I used the drill press to remove most of the mortise and trimmed up with chisels. A while ago on here someone showed how it is easier to round the corners of the tenon with a rasp than square the corners of the miter. That is a great time saver. I have now to do final fit and glue the legs to the aprons. Tops are already glued up. Then I am thinking an oil or perhaps a danish oil finish.
Anyhow pics of progress so far.

Well I finally got them finished. Got too many other things keeping me away from the shed. The aim was to be compatible with the entertainment unit so nail holes a grotty bits left in. I am fairly happy with the match. Finished with 2 coats of danish oil and will get a bit of wax in a few weeks when the d o has hardened up. Pics show the unit they are in the room with and final resting place.

Very nice work. I can see myself sitting in that arm chair, with a table by the arm with a cup of coffee and chocolate on it while I enjoy the offerings of the entertainment centre. A lovely and highly functional piece of work.

Thanks for the replies. To put some minds at ease, it looks ok with a cup of coffee on it and even better supporting a glass of red.

What they all said. Goes together very well with the cupboard. Top job. !!! And very sturdy, could take a whole case of Red and more, I reckon.
