Default Small blackwood cabinet - WIP

I've been working on this cabinet for a little while now and decided to make a WIP out of it.

It is for my sister-in law and the dimensions I've been given are a bit strange but hopefully the design will work and it will look good in it's allocated spot.

This is my first project with blackwood. The main feature is the legs which curve sideways and forward, and also taper.

I made a mock up out of pine to help me visualize the thing, and also to practice how to do the legs, which are a bit tricky. Other pics show the back assembly.

Perhaps its the perswpective of the photo, but the piece appears to be unusually shallow for a cabinet. Must admit though, that I like the "flaired" styling.

No, Wun4us, it's not the perspective. The dimensions are 550mm wide by 850mm tall by only 230mm deep, very shallow. So it isn't going to be much use for storage, that's for sure.

Hi, Christos, it's going in the entry in a small corner. The hallway will be to one side of it and there's a doorway on the other so if it was any deeper it would encroach on the doorway. SIL isn't worried about the size, as long as it looks nice in the corner and she can put a few nic- nacs on it.

Thanks, fellas. Next step is the front rails. Top rail is dovetailed into the top of the legs, lower rail is double tenoned in. A few pics to show the progress.

    Interesting.

How did you pattern the legs? Similar to cabriole legs?

Hi Specialist, I made a simple template from 3mm MDF for the curve of the legs. Once I started cutting the curves I had to mark the profile onto a curved surface. I ended up using the off-cut pieces to mark the cuts as I went. A bit hard to explain but it nearly did my head in trying to keep track of where I was up to.

Here are some photos of the trial legs, you can see the template on the bench.

Even so, it would be useful to keep the best port and liquers out of sight!

Had a couple of hours to spare the other day so I decided to get in the shed. Started cutting the door rails and stiles to length. Carefully checked the opening size to make sure the door was the right size, double checked all my measurements so the rails would be right, cut the first rail, no problem, started cutting the second rail and realised I'd forgotten to allow for the tenons. I can't explain this.

Anyway, I didn't want to make another rail and I didn't have anything that would match the rest of the frame so I decided to use floating tenons. So I made a jig, cut all the mortises and prepared a strip of timber to use for the tenons.

So I'm back on track, next is the door panel.

    Hi all,

Cut and rebated the door panel yesterday and grooved the frame. Not much shed time today, but got a chance to do a dry fit to sort out dimensions for base and shelf. Took a few pics but not the best as it is a very dull overcast afternoon here and I had to take photos in the shed, some with flash some without, It's amazing the difference in the photos.
The leg timber is a beautiful dark Tassie blackwood and the door panel is more golden, although it looks almost red in one photo. The top will be from the same board as the door panel, the MDF top shown is from the original mock up just to help visualise.

The flash on the camera does make a big difference.
