wow!
does bleaching timber effect the surface quality? Eg does it make it rough? I would imagine the products would raise the grain? But then when you sand it you could loose the bleach effect?
Also, curious how much more is vic ash than jarrah over in WA? What about construction hardwood - is that also jarrah over there?

Sanding after bleaching
Bleaching does raise the grain a bit, but light sanding is fine to get a good finish. The bleach doesn't penetrate far so heavy machining is out.
Recycled jarrah is freely available here in Perth, and it's free if you're willing to reclaim roof trusses from demolition sites and machine it into usable stock. I have a houseful of jarrah pieces made from reclaimed wood.

I see. If you were to head to your local building supply store and pick up F17 hardwood - will it be Jarrah?

A couple of WA members have commented on the declining availability of jarrah.
Dunno about Tas oak/Vic ash in WA, but there is a lot of locally grown plantation Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and shining gum (E nitens), both of which have similar colouring to the Tas oak cocktail.
