block plane
I just found this on ebay.I have searched these informative forums re low-angle and standard block planes. I know that by asking if this is a good plane at a good price, I am also inviting all you "plane" blokes to bid against me, but what the hell . I can't afford HNT,Lee Valley and the like, so secondhand it will have to be. If I lose to one of you It wouldn't be so bad

I don't think you'll have to worry about the plane blokes too much . It might be worth waiting for a low angle version to come along though.

I've not handled these personally, but as it is recently manufactured I imagine that you would have to spend a lot of time tuning the plane, and the blade etc will not be of high quality. I scored a 'Craftsman' version of the Stanley #65 (made alongside it's brother) for about &60 on ebay. Do a search.

Dends on how much you want a plane NOW, and how long you are prepared to wait. Derek may correct me, but I reckon this plane will make something in the same ball park as a #18, an older version on which this plane is modelled, they do come up occaisionally, and IMHO are worth the wait.
I bought mine off ebay some time ago, it took a while, both for one to become available, and for me to afford it, but it is a great piece of kit.
The #65 is the older version of Stanleys LA block, they make a fortune, in the end I bought a new LV LA block and have been very happy with it. I couldn't hang out for one, and they always made almost the same as the LV.
Good luck.Boring signature time again!

I may get flamed but why not save for one of those you said you couldnt afford? Time may be a consideration, but there are pro's AND cons when buying second hand.
I learned the hard way and for a novice's novice, its disheartening. You will be surprised at the specials that are around.
Im very happy with my LV's. It took me ages and a day to get them but after using crap after crap (even after learning to sharpen and flatten) it was time well spent saving.

Ordering direct from Canada the prices aren't to bad, freight probably minimal on just a LV LA, I bought one a while ago and like the others said it was worth saving for and I'm keen to shortly add the LV LA jack. If it's used as much as it's little brother for cleaning up mitres and end grain etc etc it will be worth it.

block plane enquiry
Thia is a little late, but here goes. I bought and assembled a kit block plane (low angle) from Carbatech made by H.N.T. Gordon. It's excellent and the cost saving of the kit is worthwhile. Good luck, imac
