    Default My Bookcase

Hi all, I have just completed my first project in woodwork. I have never worked with wood before and am quite proud of my achievement. Any constructive criticism is welcome and will be taken on board.

The base and rear support strut are made from pine, the rest from 19mm Veneer MDF. I stained it Antique Walnut, then coated it with varnish.

The side walls sit inside a rebate, routed into the pine base and the shelves sit in a daddo, routed into the walls and rear support strut. I screwed the shelves into the daddos via a countersunk hole and also have shelving brackets attached to the rear support strut to prevent sagging in the shelf middle.

A job nicely done. I like the routed edges.

I love the feeling of making something myself and seeing it put to use. I'm sure you'll enjoy looking at your bookshelf as you work your way through those books!

If you go to make another one, ditch the metal and go all wood. Dowels and wooden brackets (if you need them) would be a nice next step me thinks.

    Cheers,
    Af.

Thank you all for your comments.I am quite proud of it and learnt a lot through making it.

Afro Boy when you say to use dowel, is that in place of the screws?

And no, I didn't make the ship, something like that is far too advanced for my limitations, it belongs to my partner and was made for her. Beautiful isn't it.

Off to my next project - a collapsable "thunderbox" for camping. We enjoy camping and go out quite often. Not so much a "glamorous" project, more a creature comfort for my partner. I'll spare you all pics of it in use .

Yep, exactly. Or since your screws are countersunk, you could bit in a small round screw plugs of some kind to cover up the metal.

    Again, great job.
