    Default Brass knobs? Where from?

I am making some marking gauges after the style of a chap called David Barron. I want to get my hands on some knurled brass knobs preferably with a washer end as per the photo. I need at least 25 mm or an inch of thread. It seems, however than 19 to 20 mm or 3/4 inch is easy to get but anything longer is much rarer. I also need some matching threaded inserts.

Does anybody know where these may be obtained?

    Hey Chook,
Australian Woodsmith were advertising those a while back for one of their projects. Just do a google search : Austraian Woodsmith - knurled brass knobs.
Hope that is a help. Cheers Ross

Woodpeckers have knobs that look just like that (except they are through- threads) and you could cut your own brass threaded rod to length, and loctite or epoxy together. Or use a blind threaded threaded knob.

The ones I saw on Woodpeckers did not seem to be made of brass.

They seem to vary between brass and Ally chook. You could always email them.

Chook - the threads look like they are probably 1/4" NC, in which case, they will fit these inserts,. They are sold by a few places apart from Lee Valley, but prices vary hugely.

I've used them quite a bit, and they are good - once in place, they will not budge. I find it best to use a bolt with the head cut off & locknut, & start them in the drill press (edit: turning the chuck by hand, of course, not under power!), rather than try screwing them in with the screwdriver slot - that very deep, thin outer thread just doesn't want to start straight. I leave the narrow, slotted part proud, then file & sand it off to make a nice, flush surface.

I would love to be able to buy this style of insert in M5 and M6, but they are only available in Imperial sizes, though I have drilled some out & tapped them to M7, quite successfully.

    Cheers,
    IW

    Default Found it

Firstly thank you to everybody who responded to my request for help. I have no idea how they cabinet makers wood workers of the 16th to 19th centuries made anything at all without the assistance of the internet. There must have been alien intervention.
Anyway after much, very much searching, I stumbled across this site from Australia.

Thumbscrews & Thumb Nuts.. - The Wood Works Book & Tool Co.

It seems I can purchase what I want in lengths up to 35 mm or I can purchase tapped blind knurled thumb screws and insert any length of threaded rod I like. The style is not exactly what I wanted but I can live with the difference

I have a nice bit of bubinga, some of which is destined to become a marking gauge or two and a marking knife handle. As soon as I get a few odd bits of tools the rest will become saw handles. IanW has much to answer for.

The company sells all manner of interesting items and is well worth investigation.
