Brims gone - where to get veneered particleboard
It seems Brims has closed. In case anyone didnt know them, they were the manufacturers and vendors of veneered particleboards and plys. Does anyone know where to buy this stuff now. I'm after a couple of sheets of 17mm mdf with black walnut veneer on both sides.
thanks

Just went looking for them myself. Rang the Fairfield office and just got a recorded message. Gives a phone number if after sales - might be a receiver ?

Sad really. I never like to see people go out of business, but this one is a loss to all woodworkers too. Their product was a bit on the dull side - the veneer was always too-perfect - but it was convenient where dull was OK and you could get it delivered next day.
I know Mister Ply and Wood (Mister Plywood???) sells veneered mdf but if its anything other then the most common species then its a 3 week wait and a price that indicates there are a lot of middlemen in the chain.
Obviously someone must be filling the gap if they can get it at all.

You could try Laminex for veneers.
Was speaking to the reps and office manager just before they went into colsed up shop and the same old reasons was the excuse for closing down.
One of the main reasons was that you could now get Chinese imports for half the price of theirs. The quality was not as high as theirs but the cost of manufacture in Aust was too high. These days cabinet makers are looking for cost savings and quality wasn't a bigger issue than price.
Also the boss was sitting on a lot of Real Estate throughout the country. If you could imagine the Fairfield Warehouse is worth something like $+3Mil. He also said the Queensland mafucture plant was worths lots of money too (probably 10 to 20 times the Fairfield Warehouse price). The boss could sell the real estate, buy a boat and sail around the world living off the interest and still have change. I know I would do that instead of trying to compete with Chinese imports.
Another sad story - I loved using Brims boards.

I am not claiming that laminex is a Chinese import, but they do have veneer boards.
Look here. http://www.laminex.com.au/pdf/brochures/fdtv.pdf
Sorry I don't know where you can find Chinese imports, never really bothered to look.

Had a look at the laminex brochure. It doesn't appear to even be timber. Just another laminex "plastic" product.
