Default Who can build a custom bookcase in Syd?

    Hi,

I realise that this is a slightly ambigious request, but I've been asked to help a mate out with a pair of custom book cases for his lounge room. The job is bigger that I can take on with current time and equipment, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone was a) interested in taking it on or b) know of a reasonable company that would be able to do the work.

He's looking for decent work without it being done beautifully with high end craftsmanship - his budget doesn't stretch that far. So simple finishes and joinery, but well put together if this make sense.

It would be either solid pine or solid tassie oak, leaning toward tassie oak. Standard 18-19mm thickness boards is Ok. Backing panels could be veneer boards.

The shelves are about 300mm deep, with a small corner section on the end of one set of shelves coming out to a total of 700mm. The base of each unit would have a small cabinet with a shelf in it with simple doors and hardware.

I guestimated about $1100 worth of Pine and or about $2400 worth of Tassie oak, including allowances for mouldings, finishes and the small amount of hardare required. Does this seem reasonable? I wouldn't have a clue about labout costs.

If anyone is interested, please PM me, or of you know of a company who does this type of thing let me know. The places I know that do pine type furniture are more interested in pumping out standard models rather than any sort of custom work.

    thanks for your help.
    Dave

I don't have the shed space, but I recently built a corner unit for a friend like the left hand side of your plan - I think you will need to revise the shelf setup as it will not be very stable.

$1100 will only get you so-so pine around the North Shore - about $8.70 per metre plus delivery from NS Timber - unless you go to one of the cabinet maker's suppliers at Brookvale, then be prepared to pay....

If your friend wants to go Tassie Oak, get a quote from Trend Timbers & Annagote.

thanks for the response. I was going of NST's prices for pine...

You're right about the shelf design - we came up with a few options so that one isn't necessarily the final design.

I think getting a quote from Annagote or the like is a good option.

    Thanks for youe help,
    Dave

The last order I got from NST has not very good - a heap of 290 wide boards and several of them had big dings where they had been the outside boards in a pack which had been incorrectly banded, crushing the edges of the boards. If you are buying form NST I'd recommend going there in person & hand selecting your boards from the rack - something I couldn't do at the time.

Yup - I normally do select the board there by hand. The main reason I used their prices though was they're available on the website, so even if they're off by a fair margin, it at least lets you get an indicative price...

    Cheers,
