Lightbulb Building a big mezzanine/loft bed.

    Hi there,

This is my first post, I've never built anything bigger than a rabbit hutch so I have some questions about building a mezzanine in my room for my queen bed.

I have based my plans for it on the mezzanine floor at my workplace (a warehouse) and I will just be re-creating a smaller version of it in my room. I am only in the early planning stages.

I won't start building this until I'm 100% confident that I know what I'm doing.

Here is what the mezzanine will look like in my room.

I have attached the plans, with the questions with arrows pointing to what I'm talking about.

Here are some things I will also include that are not drawn up in the plans yet:
    - Safety Railing
    - Speedbrace LINK
    - I will be using Structaflor for the floor. LINK
    - I will secure the posts to the carpet with a clamp thing you screw into the floor. Can anyone tell me what its called?
    - I will use bolts and screws where possible in the hope it can be taken down and re-built without too much hassle or loss of structural integrity.

Can anyone recommend which screws or bolts I should be using? Or the safest way to hold it together where I can still take it apart and put it back together again?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Russell

    Hi Flickflame,
I'm not much of a woodworker (absolute beginner) however I have built a loft bed. I started with a standard bed frame and lifted it up 1.5meters with steel rhs... Unless your 'floor' is securely bolted to the wall (I would recommend dynabolts with a suitable steel angle to attach to mezzanine) you will need some bracing between the legs. I had steel angle halfway up the legs joining them together around three sides, However I still needed to add cross bracing (wire with turnbuckles in an 'x' on each of the three sides) to take out the racking...
    Good luck and have fun!

I really liked having the bed up high, it almost doubled the space in my room!
Don't forget to build a suitable staircase or ladder! (I had a stair case that acted as storage under the bed. (Sorry I never took any pictures, and the bed is long gone)
