Building my own Butchers Block
Hi All,
Well this is my first post and wanted to get some advice, I'm wanting to build a Butchers Block as they're very expensive and was wondering what would should I use? I was think of Maple or Blackwood but wondered what other have used in he past?
I want it to be two different tones so was thinking of cutting pieces 500 x 100 x 60 and then doweling & glueing them together ... would this work ok?
Its going to be big & heavey however thats the look & effect I'm after, plus the knife set my fiance & have recently got was about $1,800 so happy if its going to protect them.
Finally what should I stain/ coat it in to keep the appearence up and germs out?
Cheers, Chris.

Check this thread for some info and links.
You're better to glue up a long board and cut into short sections, rather than gluing lots of short bits together. Dowels are completely unnecessary as you have plenty of good gluing surface.
