Built-in bookcase ideas/plans
SWMBO wants a gigantic, wall covering built-in bookshelf unit to turn our front room into a library.
The idea would be cupboards at ground level, a row of drawers at waist height, then glass fronted bookshelves going waaay up (we have 3.5m ceilings).
The attached sketch gives a rough idea of what I have in mind, but I don't have a clue when it comes to designing the details so that they look moderately presentable and stylish.
In my experience, if I try to design the details I'll end up with something that works, but looks amateurish.
I've looked at a few plan websites and books but none seem to have something similar, or they are too vague on the details, or you can't tell without buying the plans whether they are what I want (or any good).
What I'd really like are complete plans with every design detail. I suspect I'm not going to get that, at least not if it's going to conform to how I imagine it. But I suppose even plans for something similar that I could adapt would be good.
Any suggestions?

Echidna is spot on with the need for there to be a new cornice at the top of the bookcases.
Break your design up into two parts, the first covering the bottom cupboards and drawers and the second for the series of bookcases. You will be making a series of modular pieces to be proportional across the width of the room.
If you are too concerned, why not approach a local cabinetmaker, asking him to prepare the drawings for you to build to? For a fee, it will be done site-specific, in terms of proportions, possible mouldings etc.CJ
