Thread: Bunnies selling galvanised nuts

Peter ..... I don't know what I have done to get your nose out of joint but I am not interested in getting in a public slanging match over it.
Just to clear up some points you made and I will comment no further:
I would hardly say that a standard size nut to fit a bolt product that they sell is a specialty item. If I was asking for a gold plated 1.5mm wing nut I am sure that I wouldn't look for it at a large generic hardware store. If you purchased a tap from a large hardware supplier would it be ignorant to assume that you could also purchase replacement washers?
The manufacturer of this item would only supply the minimum requirement to keep the costs down, it doesn't necessarly mean it is all you need to get the item to work in all situations. Again I wouldn't say using two nuts to secure an eye bolt, one on each side of the pole, would be that unusual.
To clear up the Triton issue I didn't see the problem in trying to find the local service agent for a tool out of warranty. Sure I could have gone to any store and told them I purchased the product there and let them spend time sending it off to get fixed ..... but I was happy to take it to the repairer directly ..... I just couldn't find one which was the main problem and created a great deal of frustration for such a simple request.
I thanked the forum member who offered to fix the item for me however, I read the post after I had given the item to the repair agent.
So if I am ignorant in your eyes, so be it.Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

I dont see what the fuss is about. if buy nuts its usually roasted and salted cashews or macadamias. they are both compatible with a cold beer and if anyone galvanises them i wont buy them anyway. and i wont buy them at bummings either.

A routine inspection was being made of a large mental hospital. Patients were being pointed out by the doctor and their conditions described: "This gentleman thinks he's Napoleon, that one thinks he's a teapot", etc. Suddenly they're confronted by a man with his trousers down, pleasuring himself with a handful of cashews.
What about this poor bloke?" asked the inspector, "Delusional as well?"
"No," replied the doctor, "he's just plain f%&$ing nuts..."The perfect is the enemy of the good.

His brother was in the same mental institution and had a habit of dragging a length of chain around the yard. When asked why he did so, he responded "Have you ever tried to push the bloody thing".

Another nutter was sitting in the middle of the lawn with a fishing rod, pretending to fish.
An amused visitor to the institution approached him and asked "Caught anything today?"
"You're the first" came the reply.
Cheers...................Sean

the shiny silver coating is electroplated zinc. This is a far thinner coating than hot dip gal and is vastly inferior. Furthermore gal bolts won't fit into zinc nuts, even if they're the same thread diameter and pitch. Gal threads are cut with a lot of free play which is taken up by the thickness of the gal coating. You'll fit a zinc bolt into a gal nut but you'll struggle to do the reverse. There's also shiny gold coating ("climaseal" a cadmium based plating)which is way better than zinc but not quite as good as gal.

I ran into the metric nuts and imperial bolts problem about 12 months ago. it is not a Bunnings problem but an industry wide problem within hardware retail and manufacturing. I gave up and used stainless, which, if you buy at specialised fastener suppliers are far better and not a lot more expensive. The only problem with SS is they are a fair bit softer and if using the screws as I also did you must be careful. I recently put about 2,500 screws in a deck and they were not overly expensive and look good.

I don't know about all bunnings but the 1 down here sells metric and imperial gal nuts, By the way i buy mine direct from AJAX FASTENERS (spurways) who are the largest suppliers of gal nuts & bolts.
As i don't have any other choices of hardware stores being rural so i go direct & save $$$$$

Sir Stinkalot,
Call me a newbie, but IMHO it's not just your Bunnings and it's not just Bunnings either. The old specialist supplier Primrose Hill Timber in Sydney used to do the same (as does Home Hardware). But they used to (I think) sell gal bolts in M sizes. And often the gal washers they sold wouldn't fit over the gal bolts. Go figure! The old shifter gets a workout as a result.
As for Sturdee's post... musta got him on a bad day (they get lots of them in Vic). If I bought what looked like Barramundi at a fish shop and got home to find it was Vietnamese catfish (which looks the same) I'd be writing about it, but probably not here.
As for the difference between a supermarket chain selling hardware and a hardware shop, I think the relevance is lost from your point. I don't think we're asking too much for the nut bucket to be stocked with only M or Imperial nuts - a mix doesn't really help anybody. Given two other hardware shops I frequent do the same says it's probably not a retailer issue.
Sounds like I'll see you around in Bunnings one day. Not necessarily by choice, but because now there often isn't one. I too part with a lot of hard-earned cash, maybe more than you because my local one is open until 6pm on Sundays. Service might be poor at times, but the opening times show they understand at least something about their customers habits.
PS. Bit young for a Sir, aren't you? [Or is this an old joke I've missed?]
