Default Bunnings sale $1 tins of hardwax???

Anyone see a trap here? Looks like an end of line clearout.

But at $1 for a 250ml tin I am thinking of grabbing a boxful for shop furniture and the like. A top quality wax costs 20x thatPXL_20210821_053224940.jpg

Bought some maybe a month or more ago. I’ve used it on a scrap and it seems like a good product. No idea what hard wax is for though. Cans are awkward AF to open.

Some guys at the shed tried some of the Golden Teak colour one and didn't have a single nice thing to say about it. It ended up in the wheelie bin.

Thanks. I grabbed a box of 6 for $6. I will try on some garden tool handles that are rough as guts anyway and see how they go.

Did they have many different colours available Cgcc? Think I'll have a look tomorrow. As I understand it the cans are awkward to open and although they tell you to stir it thoroughly you can hardly get anything in the small opening to achieve this. A few 8mm wide thin strips cut on the table saw might be the go for stirring and the plastic pull opening looks like a small cut with the snap off knife blade to get it started could be the go. That's what I'll be trying anyway.

I bought some of the clear a while back, seems to have a high linseed oil content, leaves light coloured timber with an unpleasant shade of yellow.
Used it on some dark reclaimed hardwood, came up OK, long cure/offgasssing time.

Had a look at the local Bunnies this morning. You can have brown, brown or brown! So not suitable for every timber or project, but at $1 a can it can't hurt to have a couple.

i'm really surprised at some of the specials you can get at bunnings

doing some reno's on my rental property and in the timber section they had this solid entry door marked down to $20. had just a small amount of damage but had obviously been sitting around for a while. but it was down from $480

I even went back and grabbed the duracoat one that was $50 in the same bin. Both doors came up a treat

Out of curiosity I bought a tin of this stuff a few months ago. I think it was 3 or 4 bucks then. It says 30 days between coats on the can but its dry enough to recoat within a few days. The lengthy drying time made me think it could be tung oil - but surely it couldn't be tung oil for ~$10 a litre! And it isn't. It's just a mix of vegetable oil, waxes, and colourants. I can't remember the color I bought but it looks and smells like a generic oil and the color was an oil-y yellow, it looks very much like a boiled linseed oil finish. As barramonday said, if you've got some garden tool handles, it probably wouldn't go amiss, but I wouldn't put it on anything I spent more than 15 minutes making.

Edit: It's the 'clear' version and memory was right, smells very much like vegetable oil and is very yellowy. Sample photo is, from left to right some kind of pine, blackwood, and spotted gum. Wiped on heavily, waited a few minutes and wiped off. It' wouldn't be terrible if the product didn't claim to be like the best hardwax oil ever.
