Generally they sell the same rubbish quality stuff that everybody else sells. I don't have many "local guys" around here.

Are you suggesting that i should go to a "local guy" that sells the same stuff at a higher price?

I have one "local guy" just a couple of minutes down the road that sells nuts and bolts etc. His prices are more than double the bunning's price for the same stuff -exactly the same stuff.

I am happy to pay extra for better quality or for excellent service but not because its a "local guy".

I have two Bunnings shops within 10 minutes of home, one small , one large - they are building an even larger one to compete with thenew Masters store that will open soon. They employ a hell of a lot of local guys and gals.

If they are double the price of bunnings they would want to be dipped in gold.

I have been finding that if you are after a few bolts (10 or so) it is often cheaper (or at least much better value) to buy them in larger quantities (50+) at trade suppliers than to pay the price bunnings wants to charge for purchasing individually.

Yes, there appears to be a premium for placing special orders with Bunnings, even when it is some item which is not that unusual, like a 100x914 Alox sander belt, the only size they did not stock and the size that fits on their stock linishers. When I was quoted a price of $14.50 ea and 10 days delivery.
I then placed a order with The Sandpaperman and received a similar item at much reduced price and two days. Now that was a special order.

On the subject of competition, locally, since the arrival of the big green shed two retail hardware stores have closed their doors. One remains open only to the building trade. With the building of a new Masters some 500 metres from the existing Bunnings, the big green shed has gone into expansion mode with the construction of a new store of their own.

When Bunnings came to our area many, many years ago the two local hardware shops closed rather quickly. Many of us thought it was good riddance to the cantankerous so and so's who were charging way too much and had a very limited range.

You bought what they had or nothing and they both shut their doors exactly at noon on Saturday and not to reopen until 9.00 am on Monday. Waste of a wekend if you run out of a little thing.

So I say with apologies to the Salvos " Thank God for Bunnings".

How true. Or the item you want is simply not there and you need to go to another store.

Any business can however not have an item in stock. It does not help when people like me buy a heap of one item, or they only stock one of a particular part and they just sold it.

    Hello,

I've been puzzled by negativity shown towards a certain business on other threads ..........

If one doesnt like a shop then one stays away - it is that simple - and its up to each individual to make up their own mind regarding where they go to buy nails and tools.

Would it be possible if one doesn't approve of a monopoly held by the local hardware shop, to purchase all hardware on the internet ?

McJings, Rockler, Carbatec, MachineryHouse, Hare & Forbes, Ebay and Gumtree spring to mind.................there must be a heap of others as well.

Unfortunately the way retailing has evolved, many small shops have been squeezed out of business over the last X years. Its not only local hardware shops that have been affected ................

In their turn, some of the bigger electrical, furniture and department stores have recently been squeezed by internet retailing, as has been extensively reported in the media over the last 12 months.

    Hi,

I have just received a reply from my local Bunnings store in Perth regarding this matter and got the following reply:

    Hi Craig,

I have spoken to our Merchandising Department and Carba-tec are no longer a supplier to Bunnings.

    Thanks
    Annette
