Drawer Runners
Hi there,
My Father is making me an Entertainment Unit. He has completed the design, but seems to be stuck on the drawer runners.
The drawers I asked him for are to fit DVD's/CD's and are to slide out of the side of the cabinet "standing up" if that makes sense. He has only found one set of runners he could use which held up to 100kg and cost $200! They were too large anyway. He doesn't want to use normal runners because the end of the drawer will be hidden when you slide it out.
Does anyone have any suggestions I could pass on to him?
Thank you in advance,
Jo - the difficult daughter

Hi Jo,
I think I know what you mean. What your after is full extension runners. Depending on the weight the drawers need to take and how big they are depends on the 'weight rating' of the runners you need. Bunnings sell some light /medium duty ones. If you need ones to take a fair amount of weight Hafele make a huge range of drawer runners. Look them up on the web.
Hope this helps,
All the best,
Chris

Thanks
Hi there,
Thanks for your replys. Dad asked me to clarify that the drawers are higher than they are wide. (about x3) He thinks that if its fully extended and you knock it, it would be very easy to break it off the runners?
This is all thoughts, he hasn't tried yet. Does any one have experience?
Thanks again.

You may need to use some extra side mounted runners high up.

Thanks Mat, I will let him know your idea.
Here is a sketch of the entertainment unit, the drawers on either side are the ones in question.

What you are asking about and what mat is suggesting is similar to those pull-out pantries. Here's a link to an IKEA version. Conceptually it is like haveing two drawers but with the same front panel. The problem with this idea is that the top runners can get in the way when you are removing items from the lower drawers.
One idea is to go along to some of the high street furniture places (eg IKEA, Freedom, etc). EVen though their build quality is not as good as you are aiming for, they have some clever designs which you can try out.
This is an IKEA pull-out pantry with a number of drawers

This is an Ikea computer desk - note the way it is mounted with runners on the top and bottom and you can access the cds from the side

Give Rob Malson at Gowings Mitre10 Wynard store a call.
He gets Hafele drawer runners at very reasonable prices, as well as Hettich runners. They both make bottom mount drawer slides in full extension, just pick your carry weight.
I got a bunch of side mount 550mm (22 in.) 40Kg full extension slides a few weeks ago from him & they work very well. I have mounted 10 of them in my first roll around tool chest, to be followed by another ' real soon now' - you only need about 50mm height to mount them on the side rails, and 12.7mm(1/2 in) both sides for clearance.

Jo
I am with Craig ( Forunna ) on this. Put the full extention runners halfway up the sides like on a filing cabinet. With a bit of forward planning they can actually be inset into the cabinet and drawer sides. I am sure the aforementioned suppliers will have the right stuff.
Have a good one

Thanks very much for your replies. I will pass it on to Dear Old Dad...
I'm also going to pass the web address and log in to him as I think he will find this interesting.
Appreciate the ideas, Jo.
