Thread: Wanting to buy Butt Chisels

I bought these on a whim, when I was there ( online is great) and they are really nice to use, and for the amount I use them, great value. McJING Tools Online

I brought a set of these from 6mm up to 26mm and they have a nice fine bevel on the sides which makes them good for dovetails.

Unfortunately the seller has a terrible reputation. Many on here have vowed to never deal with him again.

How do the blades hold up?
I know you can’t ask miracles for the price but wondering if you can keep a decent edge on them?

mate they are fine, although I haven’t gone to the ends of the earth like some people and spent a week flattening the backs and grinding them to 27.45 degrees, they are sharp, they are lovely in the hand, and they cut, all I ask of them. Just remind yourself how often will you use them before committing to spending big money on any tool. I see you’re in Sydney, call out to McJings shop, it’s on the main drag at Yagoona shopping area, plenty of good stuff in there, I usually allow myself an hour of browsing, my old man used to always call there when he came to Sydney, great shop and nice people.
the other brand of chisels I use mostly now are Kirschen/ Two cherries. German, top quality. Check out their website. Home - >>KIRSCHEN<< Werkzeuge

I buy mine from Northern Abrasives in Brookvale, but there are other shops that can get them.

I wasn't advocating the seller it was just the first link I found that were the same as mine. I didn't buy mine from there.
There appears to be 2 different versions of these where one has the thin land on the bevel like mine and the other has a thick one. Not sure what is different in the name that differentiates them.

They hold an edge and don't take long to get that edge, hollow grind is my preference and five minutes later they will be sharp. I can't recall the backs being much of an issue either.

ok being ignorant here....
saw the heading and thought of a proctologist doing strange things.

but whats special about Butt chisels compared to 'normal' chisels

They are short and feel more like an extension of your fingers, or the fingers you used to have before you started using butt chisels.

They are also really great for people like me who have limited hand control and strength. So much easier to use
