Where do you buy your hardware?
Marc Spagnuolo has written a very interesting piece on The WoodWhisperer site indicating that he has found that he can get better quality and price for hardware (hinges not computers) at an old-fashioned hardware supplier than at either the big box stores or the online woodworking specialists (eg Rockler, Lee Valley).
Do you have a favourite Aussie supplier of good quality and good price hardware?Cheers
Jeremy

Hardware for kitchen, furniture, school , Hardware.net.au-Hardware Online
Welcome to CupboardWare - Online Store
If I want to pop in to grab something:
Wilson & Bradley
I do also order hardware from lee Valley, they have an excellent range of handles, and service that cant be beaten..

My best source is any second hand shop, St Vinnies, Savers, etc. If some people knew what they were throwing out, they wouldn't! I've sourced solid brass handles and hinges and a variety of locks. Sometimes I buy a whole lidded box from one of these places for $2 or something ridiculous like that just to wreck the box to get the hardware.

The thing is that when you live in the USA you will always have a bigger choice of where to shop. In OZ it is very limited and service levels leave much to be desired. His mention of the hinges is somewhat strange. I purchase blum hinges (the latest ones with integrated blumotion) for $3.20 incl GST each. This is a personal purchase, and if one has a business, it could be cheaper.
But for the rest of us, LV is a pretty good choice. LV charge $4.40 for the hinges he refers to. That is not to say that great bargains do not exist at the smaller stores. In OZ we just do not have a great selection of stores.

I always go to Paddington Hardware first. No online site, but you can buy a single brass screw if you want to, and they have boxes from 1927 (or sometime a long time ago anyway). They also stock and can order a decent range of new hardware, brass etc etc. Some things are more expensive than the big box stores, but there are always plenty of people around who know where to find a left handed 1/4 inch widget in brass plate.
Cheers, Richard
