Where to buy picture frame timber in Melb?
Hi guys,
Where would be a good place in Melbourne (pref SE suburbs) to buy timber to make a custom picture frame for a sports memorabilia piece?
If possible I'd like to go somewhere that will also do the 45deg cuts. I may be able to borrow a router of somebody, but it would be great if the place could router the grooves for me as well.
Cheers!

Try Omnus Framing, 44-46 Greeves St, Fitzroy. (just off Brunswick St)
9419-2226.
They have all framing needs. If you ask nicely they might cut it for you if you have your exact measurements. "under pinning' is putting the V nails in the underside of the frame.
No connection to Omnus other than having bought from them.
FrameCo in Blackburn also have a full range of framing material and they definitely will cut for you.Last edited by Chesand; 21st April 2012 at 02:36 PM. Reason: Added more info

Might check that out as well.
I know it's a longshot, but would anybody be able to give a ball park figure of what I would be paying for 3 prints of dimensions:
900mm x 500mm
900mm x 600mm
1000mm x 500mm
a) with the frame only
b) with the frame, glass and backing
Just want to make sure I don't get stooged!

You might also try:
"Do Your Own Picture Framing Co." at 1467 Malvern Road Glen Iris (near Tooronga Road) ph 9822 7999.
This is not a recommendation, I only saw the place as I went past. They do sell materials and also run classes on framing.
As for cost it is hard to give an estimate as it depends on the frame. What you need to work out is the amount of moulding that you need + extra for cutting mitres. Allow for the fact that moulding comes in lengths and you may end up with cut offs which are too short to use. Eg 1000mm x 500mm requires minimum 3metres (allow 3.1 for cutting more for wider moulding) but if the material comes in 2.4m lengths you would need two of.Last edited by Handyjack; 26th April 2012 at 11:38 AM. For those sizes you will need a reasonably heavy frame and you can expect to pay AT LEAST $10 (+GST) per metre for framing depending on what you choose. As stated in previous post there will be wastage as it is almost impossible to get exact lengths to suit your job.
The backing is foamcore and for frames that size you will need to consider getting 5mm thick instead on the standard 3mm. You may need 3 sheets as I doubt that you will be able to get those 3 backs out of 2 sheets.
The last time I bought 3mm I think it was about $11 a sheet but it was a fair while ago.
The glass will depend on whether you choose standard or non-reflective glass. I always take the finished frames to my local glass place and get them to cut glass to fit the frames.
The Council of Adult Education used to run picture framing classes which could be helpful if you are likely to continue down this path. Frameco also run them.
Framing is relatively easy once you are shown the correct methods.
To answer a previous question re pinning, I glue my frames and when the glue is dry turn them over and while still clamped put in the V nails. I doubt that the professionals use glue.
Hope that helpsLast edited by Chesand; 26th April 2012 at 12:16 PM. Reason: Added more info

I will definately take my prints in with me so that I don't make any mistakes with the dimensions and extra length needed for the mitre joints.
Good to have a ballpark figure, and with 3 prints hopefully whereever I go will do me a good price. I will explore my options during the week and come back with my findings.
Thanks to all for the feedback

Hey woodwork noobie, not sure if you have solved this yet but seeing as you mentioned your in the south east suburbs I thought I would chime in, you could try Hass at 197 Bay Rd, Sandringham on the corner of Sydenham St.
He does a good job at a reasonable price, I wired up his showroom lights and actually our factory is next door. Tell him James, Ray's apprentice sent you if you go.
Good Luck

Cheers James.
It's a little far but I appreciate all recommendations at this stage.
I went into one framing joint near my house today (wasn't recommended in this thread, but it's one of the "bigger" ones), they asked $340ish without glass!!!! About double what I was willing to pay.
Will check out some more places during the week when I get the chance.

You haven't specified how wide you want the frame to be. Initially, you said you wanted timber frames, for which I assumed you wanted something like Jarrah, Pine, Red Gum etc. Do you still want that or are you now looking for moulding instead?
Looking at the frame dimensions listed above and assuming there is no mat board involved, you need 9 metres+ of timber all up. That will cost you somewhere between $80 and $200.00 to start. Then there is the labour of cutting the timber to length, mitring, routing the grooves for the glass and backboard. Buying the glass and backboard and turnbuttons and hanging hardware, then mounting all that on the frame. There is also the sanding and frame finish to be considered.
$340.00 is a reasonable price for three prints in moulding. If you PM me, I might be able to help you out. I'm not in SE Melbourne, but I can provide what you need.
Regards,
Rob

You might think $340 is dear but you won't get them for $170 even if you make the frames yourself.
LGS has detailed the reasons why.
Suggest you check out www.frameco.com.au or www.clubframeco.comLast edited by Chesand; 3rd May 2012 at 02:35 PM. Reason: Added more info
