Default Where to buy plastic honeycomb core

Not strictly woodwork, but I'm hoping it will get the most views here. Basically I want a sheet of this stuff, approx 600 x 400 x 10mm thick. It's just a honeycomb panel without the faces, I'm planning on making my own activated carbon panel for my air purifier because the genuine ones cost a fortune. Anyone know where I can find it?

I don't know if this is a fact, but I'm reminded of an Aussie product called honeyflow.

    Honey Straight From The Hive

They might sell you a sheet?

I've also seen this used in carbon fibre layups inside race car doors and panels, but I can't recall the company that sold it. I'll dredge my memory.

I've seen a square version (rather than hex) of this used on the outside of home central ducted heating inlet panels too (return air grill)... The old ones that were taken off and a wool-spun fibre blanket backed into it.

You could use a trougher light fitting diffuser from an office style grid ceiling , they come in 1200x300 and 1200x 600 available at electrical wholesalers stores

Thanks, I'll look into those. I couldn't find any car mesh thicker than 6mm, but the diffuser stuff should be perfect

Try the vehicle / RV / Truck industries. Perhaps they can steer you towards a supplier of the core material they use in lightweight panels.

"Innovative MaxiLITE Panels - These panels are produced using in-house manufactured gelcoated fiberglass reinforced skins which are bonded to a polypropylene light-weight honeycomb core and made to your exact length, width and height requirements."

Eggcrate. Amazing what you find when you know what it called

Next question: Given that glue and plastic usually don't like each other, would a hot iron work to fuse the mesh to the face? Plastic is polystyrene, mesh will be fibreglass flyscreen.

Cyanoacrylate and epoxy glues should work on both fibreglass and polystyrene plastic.

The comb from the ‘Flow Hive’ would not be suitable for several reasons
    1. it would be far too expensive!
    2. The comb is not complete closed cells.

The combs are made up of separate plastic pieces. The pieces are made to slide apart when it is time to harvest the honey.
I heard about an enthusiastic and inquisitive beekeeper at a club meeting who fiddled with the wires holding things together - there was a spectacular explosion of hundreds of plastic pieces.

Still prefer the iron idea if it would work...410*310mm panel x2 sides = a lot of tiny lines of glue

Use a cheap craft foam roller for laying down the epoxy glue.

Another reason i like the iron idea is that it's reversible (in theory), so when the carbon pellets become saturated it should hopefully just be a case of iron off the mesh, refill and iron it back on again.

Anyway, picked up a 1200x600 panel today from Australian Sheet Traders, carbon pellets are on the way...we shall see how this works

I would use brass flywire as it would melt into the polystyrene and remain undamaged. Easy to remove by just reheating.
