Is it called a "keyhole joint"?
Reading some discussion on joints reminded me of some intersting joints I saw in a little old pub in France a few months back. They were in a mantle which was probably 400 mm high and about 250 mm deep, over an old fireplace if I remember right. I took a couple of pictures.
I don't think the dovetail joint looks incredibly difficult, apart from the size obviously, but the keyhole joint (if that's it's name) intrigued me. The "hole" part was about 150m in diameter.
Sorry about the quality of the pictures but I only had my mobile phone with me.

That "keyhole" joint in pic 2 can be seen in a few older places in Normandy (is that where you were?). A nice craftsman's method for a pretty solid and glueless joint. Boring the hole would be straightforward, but I've no idea how the end of the 'tenon' would be shaped in that manner. Probably a specialised plane I would think.
I might give that joint a go on a future project - so thanks for the reminder

Thanks Bob, the Brickwork one is a labour of love and I just hope I can find the time to do it justice.
We have become soooo busy lately I hardly have the strength to sit here.

Hi Steve. We weren't in Normandy. We were right down the south at the base of the alps in Grenoble. That pub was the only time I saw that type of woodwork.

Hi, can you please repost the pictures/links to those pictures? They're not in your post anymore. I know it's been 17 years, but I hope somehow you're still online, merci beaucoup!

Rookie hasn't been on the forum since 2020 and Auld Bassoon is no longer with us.
Those were the droids I was looking for.
