Camphor laurel bar
I am a HSC student in nsw.
Im considering buying a camphor laurel slab for a bar. I have a few quetions that would be very usefull to me if answered.
1. Will the timbers colour clash with the mini orb im using for the face and sides of the bar?
2. How and what do i finish it with.
3. What timber could i use to match it for the draws cuboards and shelfs etc. Also what timber could i use for contrasting coulours and is this a good idea?
4. What defects should i look for before bying it.
5. is $80 about the price for a slab 50 think 400 wide and 2m long?

1. No it shouldn't clash
2. I would check out some advice in the "finishing" forum.
3. Personal taste I reckon but I would go for something a bit darker. Red Cedar maybe.
4. Pretty much the same things as any timber, splits/cracks etc and serious imperfections.
5. I would say that would be reasonable for CL that size. Might cost a bit more.
Just remember the dangers of using CL and work with the appropriate dust masks etc.
This is just my personal opinions and others may have other ideas.Last edited by munruben; 3rd November 2009 at 09:57 AM. Reason: To add link to finishing forum.
Reality is no background music.

I made this bar a while back and used rose butter nut with a cedar stain but any solid color timber would go well with camphor - her is the link

Agree with John.
Mini orb can be painted, don´t forget. Friends of mine used MO for a project and painted it with a copper coloured paint. Looks fantastic. You might consider experimenting with some colour for the MO.
