Default Canberra Timber, tools and artisans show

I’d be interested to hear of others impressions if you’ve been or if you attend this weekend.

Perhaps I’ve been spoilt with the Brisbane show which took the best part of a day to cover, but I confess that I was a little surprised at just how disappointing I found the Canberra version today.

$16.00 entrance fee seemed a little steep until I looked in my "showbag" to see amongst the advertising flyers what I thought was the latest Australian Woodsmith Magazine............. only to then find just now when I’ve sat down to enjoy it that it was actually an old 2013 edition.......”Mark your diary now: Canberra Timber and Working with Wood show 30Aug - 1 Sep 2013”............just having a bit of a lend perhaps at $16.00?

The show of course had the usual wonderful and very welcome stalwarts who always seem to make the best of efforts to attend each of these shows and without whom they’d be nothing. And there was some nice timber to be had, albeit seemingly a bit steep in price and not much of the way in bargains to be had.

However no matter how much I dawdled around every stand at the show .......and then dawdled back around every stand a second time, I found myself at a loose end in under an hour (and found myself feeling very guilty for skiving off from work early in order to spend the rest of the afternoon there).

Are these shows perhaps dying off in popularity or is this the norm’ for Canberra and I have indeed been spoilt by the Brisbane show?

it was certainly a fair bit smaller than the last time i attended canberra (2 years ago) ... on the plus side, there still seemed to be a bit of money being spent and was mildly interesting to see a couple of unusual exhibitions (feather lady, water features lady)

i go back today (my wife and i take one friend on friday and a different one on saturday), but like you, i struggled to spend an hour there yesterday ... my friend was disappointed that the local woodworkers didn’t have a display as she normally spends a bit of money there buying xmas presents

by the way: i first went to the wood show in sydney about 1991 (and have attended one or three of sydney, melbourne and canberra almost every year since) and it was huge and vibrant BUT in those days there was no internet to even view things, let alone buy them ... the idea of buying things from overseas would have been largely unthinkable for the average punter ..... the shows were better attended because they were bringing things together in one place. ...

i think $16 is a negligible entry for something like this, however disappointing the size of the show

the "local woodworkers" had a prior commitment at Southpoint Shopping Center in Tuggeranong, until Tuesday. We dont have the resources to be in 2 places at once (and you will not have to pay an entry fee)
