i will bite, just for the fun of it.

i would say carpentry is one of the most precise trades on a construction site.
come and give me a hand for a week and we shall see what your precision work is like.

by the way, before you go bagging the crap out of us chippies, give us some back ground please.
what do you do for a living?

    regards, justin.
I am not sure I am bagging the crap out of anyone, however construction quality seems to be getting less and less... I live in a house built a long time ago (the walls are vertical tongue and groove pine)...We have had some small rooms added in in recent years...The timber used split when nailed and the solution was more nails.... My sister recently got some work done on her house....10mm gaps were simply fixed by jamming a random piece of wood in and more nails added..

I do not tar all carpenters with the same brush, as in all industries there are good and bad among them...I have no doubt there are many good ones out there and you are probably one of them, but construction quality these days is not for a long life house especially since we import 300 000 people a year and have a shortage of people to build houses to house them...

Rc i think you need to climb down off your high horse. The true craftsmen is dying, but they do exist. I did my apprentiship as late as the mid 90's with some very old school chippies, all in there 60s. My first tool kit consisted of a panel saw, timber tri-plane, bit and brace and i wasn't allowed near a power tool untill i had mastered all hand tools, an experience i'm far richer for now. And you can forget a nail gun. mortice and tenon and half housing joints all day. I could hand cut a roof before i'd even seen a truss.
