Default carpentry - how to build a small shed

I want to build a small shed for my 2hp dust collector, with a swinging door.

The slab I have for this ( was once for an old split system aircon unit) measures 1200 x 750, with the 1200 side against the brick wall of the house.

I need some carpentry advice and plans on how to build this dunny looking shed, not ever having built anything with 70 x 35 stud frame timber before. I need the roof to slope forward, high end against the house wall. The high end will be 2.2 m high or so to house the 1.9m high DC.

The exterior will be sheeted in Colorbond sheets. I will need a vent in the door and in the upper sides of each wall.

I am hoping some experienced carpenters out there can point me in the right direction.

do you think I would need Council approval for this structure?
    regards,

    Dengy

    Default DC shed

    Hi Jill,

I've posted a few photos of my DC shed. Mine has a steel frame, not timber as you are planning, but it may give you some ideas.

It's located at the rear between the shed and fence and is approx 1250mm x 1100 x about 2000mm.

I think you'll find 750mm a very tight squeeze, assuming your DC is of similar dimensions to mine (also a 2hp).

Note the ventilation openings on all three sides. Mine also has doors on both sides which allows good access for changing bags etc. I have it hard wired with a switch inside.

I don't know about your local council regulations but here in Newcastle we can put up lawn lockers etc without council approval.

    Hope this helps, Kev

thanks for this , Kev, that is certainly along the lines I need, and your photos have helped clarify my thinking

Does the enclosure do anything to reduce the noise?

No, but because it's located in between my shed and my neighbours' chicken coup and so far away from our houses, noise is not a problem.

I did think about lining it with foam or something at one stage but now realise it's not necessary.

    Thumbs up Shed plans

    Hi Jill,
I was recently in Mitre10 and saw some pamphlets on buliding a timer shed. I picked up a few pamplets and the one for the shed has plans for a bigger shed than you are talking about, but you could look at the constrution and work out the constuction of your shed.

The pamphet is part of a series called Project Planner's the shed is No 38 of the pamphlets.

Have a look for the pamphlet or PM me and I should be able to scan the pamphlet of have a look on the M10 website.

My one definitely looks more like a dunny.

It's nothing special. I just built 4 light wall frames from 70 x 35 pine (basically just rectangular frames) and then nailed them all together. I didnt bother cladding the rear of the dunny, it just butts up against the shed. The bottom is open and there's another big vent above the door behind the unpainted oregon board for air flow.

It does reduce noise a bit but it's still significant, though much quieter than having the DC inside the shed. It now sounds very much like my neighbor's pool filter pump.

Painted up to match and it's very unobtrusive.
