Default Casters for chairs on pine floors

There doesn't seem to be a thread about this so I'll take a chance and ask here.

My office chair and drafting stool both have hard casters which are damaging our limewashed hoop pine floors. Can anyone recommend a suitable brand of caster or an outlet where I might buy them, please?

An alternative would be a plastic mat which is specifically made for this purpose, mainly to go under chairs on carpet.

I doubt there is any caster that would not damage the floor.

Thanks very much for the link, Chris. I did consider mats but with 4-5 different places in my office/studio where I use chairs it would get a bit cluttered. I have found a company that can supply what they tell me will protect hoop pine floors:

"We have a castor that has a soft polyurethane tread on it that is suitable for chairs and hoop pine floors – they tyres are softer than the standard black nylon chair castors."

I think I'll try them. They'll be better than those on the chairs now.....can't get too precious about the floor. It's a floor.

    Thanks again, Jen

    Hi Jen

There are soft tyred castors available for use on hard floors i.e. not carpeted These are required to comply with the Office chair standard, basically a safety measure to stop the chair rolling out from under you when sitting down. The last ones I bought came from Zanui they should solve your problem.

    Hi Grahame,

Thank you for your input and the supplier's name but I have already ordered those I mentioned last post. I did consider the castors that don't move unless you're sitting down but given the size of my office/studio I'd have been trying to commute around in a sitting position rather than just being able to quickly push the chairs where I want them.

(Would have introduced an element of exercise into the effort though.)

    Thanks again, Jen
