    Default Casting Resin Question

    Hi All,

I have a question/s on casting resin that I'm hoping someone can help answer, hope this is the right section.

I've filled a few gum veins in some jarrah and the resin has shrunk below the surface of the timber. They're only small depressions but they're low enough that I won't be able to sand them out.

Will freshly mixed casting resin adhere to fully cured casting resin? The first lot of resin was poured on Sunday.

I intend to wipe it with metho or acetone before topping up but would I be better to rough the surface with some 80 grit, cleaning and then laying the new resin over the top?

If I do this though would the scratches show through the resin?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Jarrahfrog. We use a lot of resin to fill gum veins and cracks every other day. Yes you can pour more on top and it will adhere but you will be better off roughing the surface first. You shouldn't see the scratches after the second pour cures.

Hi JF, what Marginata said. When filling a deep hole, build a dam around it with hot-melt glue so that you can fill above the surface with resin. The resin can be planed, sanded etc. once it's set.

I think it is recommended that you only fill up 10mm at a time as the resin contracts abit when cooling as you have found out. Another good trick I use is mix in a bit of black brickies oxide to get a nice black gum vein.

    AlexS, Slavo,

    Thanks for the replies.

I did over fill the holes but it looks like I had a bit of trapped air. As it's come to the surface the resin has sunk down further.

I've found a few tricks in the forum since pouring the first lot such as heating the timber with a hot air gun beforehand, and now building a hot melt glue dam around the hole first! I like that one, simple but effective.

I'll keep them in mind for next time.

    Cheers
