    Default CD and DVD Cabinet

I built this cabinet about a year ago to house our ever increasing collection of CD’s and DVD’s. I haven’t posted it before because it takes a while for me to stop looking at the faults in my work. Now that I can’t remember the faults it is safe to do so.

I decided to throw away the CD and DVD cases and store all the disks in plastic sleeves which overcame the problem of storing different size cases. The unit will hold 1,800 disks but I doubt it will ever be full as we are still working on the top set of drawers. The disk capacity was a result of the cabinet needing to fill a void in our activity room and perhaps more storage and fewer drawers might have been better.

The disks are numbered and stored numerically with a 3mm MDF divider every ten disks. I have made an Access Application that indexes the disks and stores all the songs, movies, artists and can do a word search or print lists. SWMBO will not touch a computer so I have an alpha and numeric list in a folder for her to scan. I don’t have to worry about reserving space for music or movies or even grouping to themes as the database takes care of that.

As the disks are stored numerically it is easy to discover a missing disk - but much harder to find it.

The unit is solid pine (now that’s an oxymoron) with the exception of the drawer bottoms and dividers which are MDF. It has been sprayed with polyurethane and I mixed the Baltic stain with the first two coats. Cost was a major factor in building this cabinet and I used all my rejects from other projects on this job. This is also why I have wooden knobs on the drawers and brass knobs on the doors.

I have attached photos of the cabinet and a drawer full of disks.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Nice cabinet, Rod. I can't see any mistakes. I wonder why you went for storing the disks in plastic sleeves rather than slimline cases. I would be dubious about the long-term durability of the sleeves, and the slimline cases would protect the disks better. I reckon you would still be able to store about 1000 disks in slimline cases in 24 drawers.

I am my worst critic and always see fault or ways of improving a finished piece so it takes a while for me to relax. I have built all the furniture in our house and might post more later on.

I agree with you about the slimline cases verses the sleeves. The slimline as well as the standard case will fit in the drawers so that is not a problem. I chose the sleeves because it was the only thing I thought of at the time. I think my reasoning was that I could fit more disks in a drawer but in hindsight it was never going to be a problem.

We went through an exercise at work on archiving and they only recommend the integrity of CD storage for 15 years with top label gold disks. This puts a bit of a slant on it but proper storage should help extend a collection. Light and fungus are the biggest threat but I would say my collection is threatened more by my son.

Hi Rodm, buddy, you better post some more pics of your work. you can't just post pics of one piece and tantalise us by telling us there is more!!!

Love the CD/DVD cabinet - a great design, very similar to one I've been trying to design for a friend without success as I never considered taking the cds out of the cases.

    Great work!
    cheers

Nice work Rod, I dont think Id like to store my disc's like that, those plastic sleeve's tend to scratch once dust gets about.
Solid wood... just because some dont like crapiarta it doesnt mean it's not solid wood, no oxymoron involved its just harder to do quality work with than a lot of other woods!

    Thanks for the comments.
I have posted again under "More Furniture" for some of the other items I have made.
    Cheers,
