Thanks

Ivor,
I believe Timbecon have CD racks in their range of products under the category of woodcraft products- Although they are not in NSW, they do mail order though.

CD racks are avaiable thjrough furniture accessory suppliers, I had a catalogue with them in but the catch was I had to place a $100 MINIMUM ORDER AS THEY ARE WHOLESALERS.
I cannot recall the supplier but it was something along the line of howard silvers in Vic.
They came in black or white and were in banks of 5 or 10 with a little spring device at the back to eject the CD from the rack.
Push in once to put in and push again to pop out. Check your local diectory for furniture suppliers.
Found it...

DON"T order from Timbecon, i ordered a forstner bit and some other things from them over 2 months ago and they sent me an e-mail telling me they had it all in stock.
Then 3 days later i got another e-mail telling me i will have to wait about 6 weeks for the forstner bit, and i am STILL WAITING!!!!!
This was my first order from them and it was definately not a good first experiance. Needless to say i sent them a nasty e-mail and will NEVER order from them again

Try Gary Pye Woodturning. [email protected]
He has the cd rack inserts, I did have his cataloge but I lost it in the study (more mess then the garage). He is in Currumbin QLD but very quick in sending goods. I have tried Timbecon before and had no trouble, there web site leaves a little to be desired however.

Glenn, I am the M.D. of a USA based manufacturing company that imports a full range of CD storage devices. (For the life of me I can't understand why a woodworker would go to the trouble to make CD storage units when there are so many types available on the market at dirt cheap prices, both the ones we make and competitive units.)But perhaps these are CD storage units bing built into larger entertainment centres.
Anyway, the real point of this respone is to say that DVD's fit into CD storage units. Their diameters are identical; the DVD is slightly thicker. The problem is that DVD's are packaged in larger cases than CD's. But there is a simple solution to this. Just remove the DVD from their case and insert them into a standard CD Jewel Case. CD Jewel cases can be purchased from Officeworks, or most other office product outlets.
Very soon DVD burners will be available at a very reasonable price, and the burnable DVD's for these burners already come in standard CD type Jewel Cases. Most people in the industry believe that original DVD's will soom come in the same cases. So making a storage device to hold the current sized DVD might make your unit obsolete.
Isn't technology a wonderful thing?

No where on this blue planet will you be able to buy, off the shelf, the CD Storage unit I built for myself. It sits lovingly on my desk full of CD's recieving countless comments from friends and family who ultimatly want to know where they can get one the same......That plastic crap and commerical crap just ain't the same....

Amen to that, Shane!
DPB, while DVD's may fit into CD cases etc, any potential clients I make a rack for are not going to want to remove all their DVD's into crappy CD cases with a photocopy of the slip cover. Thanks anyway.

Hey, I was just trying to help.
The real point of my posting was that things are going to change. There's every reason to believe that the packaging for the two formats will merge which will make the DVD package format obsolete.
I realise this is a forum on woodworking, and I understand why we make things from wood - that's what we do for the love of it! I'm making small jewelry boxes (and not very good ones yet). I can purchase these at Kmart for a fraction of the cost and time it takes me to make one.
However, just to comment on your last point, Glenn, there are some great labeling products out there that enable you to create CD Lables every bit as good as the original, so it's not necessary to compromise on this if you use a CD Jewel Case. I'll be glad to explain how this is done if you are(or anyone else is) interested.
