Central Coast / Newcastle NSW
Hi All,
I'm new to this forum and just starting out in wood carving / whittling and after reading through the forum posts, it seems I should try and use Huon Pine or Jelutong? I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheapish timber suppliers on the Central Coast or Newcastle NSW? I don't want to pay a great deal just yet as I am only starting out and will probably destroy my first few pieces anyway..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Sorry if someone has already posted about this. I tried looking but could not find any related posts.
Thank you,
Kristie

Kristie,
Welcome. Central Coast Woodturners/Woodworkers are a strong and effective group and they may be able to help you in many ways. Personally I think that if you start with some Jelutong it would be preferable and I should think much cheaper than Huon Pine which is sourced from Tasmania. It is a beautfiul wood and turns ( & looks) like butter. You may be able to pick up their details from this Forum. All the best. Drillit.

Thank you wheelinround and Drillit. I have been in touch with Mal at Boutique Timbers and currently sorting something out with various pieces of Timber to play with
Thanks again!

Get onto the central coast wood turner (wyong) they are helpful and someone there will most likely give you some timber to start.
I wouldn't bother trying to source timber yet... get some lessons on sharpening knifes and gouges, get the best tools you can afford. and just start hacking at any old timber,
Unless you are a little over zellous, then a small chunck of nice wood for carving will cost only a few bucks.
Frank? at Tumbi Umbi, will have some just call in and knock on his door. he is two or three houses back from the mingarra round-a-bout. (look for small sign on verandah.)Steven Thomas

Thanks for that! I obtained some wood from the lovely guys (Mal & Greg) at Boutique Timbers in Port Macquarie. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I'd feel awkward about just knocking on someone's door without prior notice :P Does he actually run a business or just has extra wood for his own personal use?
Thanks again!

Mal has a "LOT" of extra wood.
He is the main supplier of beautiful, rough sawn timber for many of us on the Forum. A great source of native timbers at the best price about.
He does have a farm but I think he spends most of his time getting timber and preparing it for us.
"Lovely blokes".......probably....sure are.Scally

Scally he was talking about Frank, in Tumbi Umbi.
Yes its'a business, he is a furniture maker and sells timber. He sells by the superfoot though, so bone up on your 12 times tables...
(width in inches x thinkness in inches x length in feet.) / 12
Good luckSteven Thomas
