    Default Central Victorian Woodwork supplies.

    Gday Folks. Long time lurker rare poster.. Usually all my questions come pre answered on this forum
    New acc for this venture.. Old one’s nobody you’d miss.
    If I may I require your input.. For a while now as a Central Victorian based wood worker I have lamented the lack of suppliers of fine woodworking tools and timber. Long story short, my current employer has shown more enough enthusiasm to fill that void and has handballed the job onto yours truly.
    Bugger! Moan and groan about not having what you want long enough and eventually someone will give it to you. That’ll fix me
    So far I have a very basic list of what I see as appropriate stock for such a venture and have started to source a few things that I have had on my “wish I could find” list for a long time.
    We will not be venturing into power tools.. We’re leaning towards the darksiders with this one I’m afraid.
    So.. What’s on your “wish I could find locally” list?
    Don’t go easy on me. let loose, it’s a wish list. Wether or not I can chisel a realistic list out of it is my problem.
    Turners most welcome btw. I also share that affliction.

    G'day RB,

    Being someone who moved from Bendigo some years ago and visiting recently I have to agree there wasn't a lot on offer. Darksider stuff, hmm and assuming that you want to keep away from what Bunnies has to offer, how about:
    • UBeaut products;
    • HNT Gordon planes
    • Japanese saws
    • workbenches, vise & accessories
    • quality squares, marking guages, dial calipers etc...
    • quality glue/s - titebond, west system epoxy
    • waterstones
    • quality chisels (japanese?)
    • hardwood dowels
    Lots more - a line of quality furniture hardware etc... work out what you want to specialise in and go for it. Hope you get something up and running, sure there would be a market for it

    A great start Brett add a good selection of turning gear and you have my direction pinned.. along with a good selection of antique gear and (I'm hoping) a sharpening service for your hand saws. I really dont want to simply replicate carbatec, Mcjing or Mr Carroll (great store, sells me my turning gear) I'd like for example to offer custom built workbenches and tool boxes by local craftsmen. An attatched gallery is a potential.
    Collectors and Art fanciers are a staple and something we have a little practice with.. its catering to the craftsmen themselves that interests me and is the direction I'd like to explore.

    Gra.. I hope no offense is taken by keeping it cryptic for the moment. Vic's a compact state.. but if you lived in Bendigo you could swing by without needing to pack a lunch.

    Powertools I would recommend would be FEIN and DREMEL products - not what you asked, but I believe they are invaluable tools for even the most fastidious woodies.

    Being in Kilmore, I am always looking for an excuse to go north instead of South for a drive.... this reason would be great as I do go up there to look at architectural salvage from time to time.

    Just one thing though - I think you're already hip to this, but in case you're not. .... it may be prudent to seek the moderator's advice on any further promotion of your venture. I am looking to gather people together shortly, to build a venture myself (nothing to do with yours) and while I have more posts and all that, I would seek their guidance before posting anything of a relatively commercial nature.

    a great link Brett!

    I'm more after that one elusive thing you never seem to be able to find or only ever see online.

    for me it was really sexy trammels.. and a good selection of long lengths pre threaded 3/4" pipe for clamps.

    I gave up that search and bought hi-tensile 3/4 gal pipe from the local steel shop and some of those Irwin clamps with the spring loaded steel feathers........works just fine.

    Good luck with your venture.....every regional town should have something like this. Mine was lucky enough to get a MIK outlet!!
