jeez wheelin', I've been telling everyone I hand carved it.......

Being on a (forced) sabbatical from the shed, I'm visiting daughter number 1 and so I took the opportunity to put 'Ellen' with one of the tables.....

    image.jpg

...originally I was thinking of it as a TABLE with 2 chairs but the chairs are so 'imposing' that I'll need to start thinking of it as 2 CHAIRS with an occasional table?
Anyway, the chairs are comfortable, they'll look better with leather cushions ....and I have to finish them because the bits are filling the shed!

    Your chairs look great.
I like the detail of the carving.

Beading would add another interesting detail to them but they definitely don't need it.
They will be great conversation pieces with the story about your ancestors that you have for each one.

It would have to be Two Chairs and a table.

The sabbatical is over, my finger is sewn back on and I'm back in the saddle! Given my recent router 'incident', I was quite dreading the router shaping of the side frames but all 10 remaining side frames are now finished. I used a jig, patterns and a spiral follower bit to create the shaped sides and radiussed joints......

I can now get back on to assembling the dining chairs and then clear the deck for the related office and rocking chairs, Don and Mary

Default I couldn't go to Jerilderie ....so I thought I'd go to extremes!

In spite of the heat, I had some time today and decided to really get stuck into the chairs. The result is 6 chairs finished, a first coat of finish (Wongo's Wonder Wipe!) on all .... and, because I did it outdoors, heat stroke.

The next step is to fit the steam bent back slats to 5 and get the cushions made.

    Very nice Fletty.
I'll bet that finish was drying in record time today.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks Tony, you certainly live in the right place now for the heat.
The finish dried almost as fast as the spilled gin and tonic ... but then again it was dry gin ?

Hence the heat stroke instead of back stroke in the pool

Nah, had a bit of a backward step with my finger and not allowed to swim in the pond!

My shed is too small to work on the 6 chairs so moved up to the house to fit the back slats. Took a leaf out of ol' Henry's book and set up an assembly line .... ah the joy of space!

    20150126_174724.jpg

I'm gluing the slats with hide glue because I'm still concerned about the slats breaking and needing to be replaced. Only time will tell. The slats are quite flexible and need to be located by a jig near the middle while the glue sets.

    20150126_143355.jpg

Once the slats are all set, I'll apply a few more coats of Wongo's Wonder Wipe and they're finished.

Default a long tale with a twist

Once upon a time, a gentleman worker determined to make a set of red cedar chairs for his daughters.
They were delightful children and very excited about the new chairs.

They were to of an unusual design and following an ancient tradition of master craftsmen, he set about finding the right timber.

The first boards were too short, the next were too light in colour but after a period in the wilderness looking for just the right timber, he managed to find boards that were suitable and he set about planing and shaping them.

The first boards wouldn't hold the tricky curves and he had the darndest time getting the glue to set and the boards to match and the timber to bend. Then he ran out of timber and had to find more boards and then the weather got too hot and then too dry.

Time passed and it was a challenge and he found the project a handful

His children said 'Dad, it's OK we would be happy with ALDI or IKEA' as long as your deft hand is used in construction'.

But he was a determined man and kept on with the tricky task of steam bending and shaping many many parts.

Then one day, disaster struck and he was left with a damaged hand that made the construction even more difficult.

But he was determined and stuck to the plan and continued on with the work. His days became long and the nights even longer and he dreamt and slept chairs and cedar and glues and steam bending and sawdust and blood.

Until one bright day, on a sunny afternoon, the chairs were finished and they were magnificent.

His children said: "Dad. they are beautiful and will be treasured as they are made with the blood, sweat and tears of a loving man'

Moral of the story: 'Love conquers all'

A wonderful effort by a great man

All the best for this year

    Greg
