    Default A challenge!

Okay so now we have hinges sorted... what about a challenge to make wooden clasps? Like guitar cases have... see Im making a wooden laptop computer case and have everything else nutted and its starting to come together... I just do not want to wreck the finish by putting chrome clasps on it

    So the challenge is
Create and explain the process of a pair of wooden clasps... one side of the open case is 2in wide the other 1 1/2in (dont know the metrics) so they will need to fit within that spacial area

    Any takers?
    Cheers
    Shane

Very interesting. (We need a moustache-twirling or beard-fingering emoticon!)

Give me an hour or two, Shane, and I'll find an article in one of the woodies' mags that featured a number of different wooden clasps.

Why bother making a wooden case for a laptop?....the thing will probably weigh more than the laptop. Must be a Mac if youre going to all that trouble. If its a grotty old PC then just tote it around in a used rubbish bag

Hey Shane - how about a kind of hasp and staple?

Why not make one of your hinges with the leg on one side much longer than the other, then drill a hole in the longer leg which fits over a dowel. Put a hole through the dowel and lock with a smaller dowel.

I will try to do a sketch and post later. Can't use a puter to draw.

Kiwi me ol cobber... its not an apple! but what Ive found is the case Ive got is way to big to fit in the overhead compartments on the plane to work as its too flamin thick! so Ive either got to buy another one thats thinner or I make one... and the choice is?... what was the question?

There you go jmk!! get those creative juices going mate!! so the larger dowel is fitted to and through the side of the case? and the hinge is only attached on one side? mmmmm thinkin thinkin

Now see if we gets into this a tad we will create something that maybe we will all use down the track! sharin the love

    Found it!

There's an article entitled: "Custom clasps for boxes" in FWW Issue #179. I reckon it's exactly what you're looking for, Shane. I can't post a pic here because I reckon it would be some sort of copyright infringement but one of the designs looks a bit like the attached.

Wow, Wild Dingo/Shane. An ambitious project!!!!!!!
Remember to make some nice compartments inside for the power packs and charger. What other compartments?
Is this to become the laptop case equivalent of the H O Studley woodworking chest that needed three men to lift it?
I wish I had the courage to attempt one; perhaps I will when I see your photos.
