    Default Channeling timber help!

I need to "channel" some timber to reduce the weight, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have six planks of Silver ash 1800 X 100 X 50 out of which I want to construct a working replica of an ancient Hawaiian surfboard. I realise there are kits available using Paulowina timber, but they are only 38mm thick and not the "Look" I'm after. I have attached (hopefully) a rough sketch of what I want to do, so any advice about the best way to go about it would be appreciated.

I can only think of three ways to do this:

1: Cut the channels using a mortise machine.

2: Rout out the channels using a long straight 1/2" router bit and a rectangular template guide. You'll have to attack the channel from both sides.

3: Split the wood down the middle and cut the channels as trenches using a router or table saw, then reglue the wood back together again.

Option 2 would probably be the easiest to implement and look the neatest but will also take the longest to do.

For real authenticity you should use a stone chisel to chop out the mortices, using an old leg bone nobody needs anymore as a hammer

Not all that good a way to do it - it's a huge amount of machining just to get the 'look', but if you must do it that way, then suggestion number 3 above would be my vote.

A better way to do it would be to resaw the timber into flexible veneers and assemble up from there, using thin plywood to create an internal web - this sort of thing: http://broceanography.com/2006/10/14...-construction/

Why not hollow torsion construction? and lay your silver ash over the frame ?
Routing out or milling out the timber seems like an awfull waste to me.
